1192184 2011-04-05 09:25:00 The usual complaint but I'm only getting 1.5 MPS download maximum. Had a long talk with Telecom helpline and they said their testing showed I should be getting 5 MPS. Techie convinced me that the modem/router was at fault so I bought a new Thompson TG585 V8 as supplied by Telecom so they couldn't complain about the equipment. I now get a massive 1.5 MPS. Yeah, exactly the same.

OK I guess that was $99 to prove the router isn't the problem. So why aren't I getting 5 MPS as Telecom say I should?

Yes there are filters on all lines. No the alarm system is not on the same phone line.

What else can it be? Where are my missing 3.5 MPS going?

OR is Telecom telling porkies about the speed I should be getting? Surely not!

1192185 2011-04-05 09:38:00 Check in the router settings the noise and attenuation on the line + the sync speeds.

Also could you post a link from speedtest.net (just for examination)

1192186 2011-04-05 10:31:00 Is this broadband result comparable ?.

1192187 2011-04-05 11:40:00 A few this:
1) Those are still low-quality routers (at best), I wouldn't rule it out as being the cause
2) Login to your router and post the SNR / Noise Margin / Attenuation information of your DSL Line
3) Do the speeds fluctuate during the day / night?
4) What does www.telecomwholesale.co.nz say your connection is? ADSL2+?

1192188 2011-04-05 12:09:00 Also what does the modem report the connection speed as ?
Download tests don't necessarily relate to the speed you connect at directly, a lot of things can influence them.

1192189 2011-04-05 12:12:00 In answer to your questions

Uptime: 1 day, 2:12:35

DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/MB]: 0,00 / 111,56

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 11,5 / 15,5

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 22,0 / 40,0

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 12,0 / 13,0

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BCLA

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Is this saying I should be getting 5.024?

Speed doesn't really fluctuate much 1.4 to 1.55

www.speedtest.net Not very impressive!

ADSL2+ does not come to my exchange until June acording to Telecom

1192190 2011-04-05 12:22:00 well yes it does say you connect at 5mbps however that doesn't tell you what speed is available from the cabinet or exchange back into the network and how many people you share it with.

Some cabinets are fibre fed and give good speeds while others still work over copper and don't perform so well. The minimum speed feeding a cabinet can be as low as 2Mbps for example and can be shared among quite a few customers.

ADSL2 can go up to 8Mbps also so at 5 you aren't even reaching that potential. The upgrade to ADSL2+ in future should theoretically improve things quite a lot.

1192191 2011-04-05 20:11:00 Cool so there's a high chance then that your Exchange's backhaul connection is overloaded. Not much that can be done until June.

Your downstream attenuation could also be a little better, though at worst you would experience drop-outs, but it's still "acceptable" I'd say.

You could ring and complain, but realistically not much is going to happen until June. It's likely no better with another ISP so I wouldn't go ISP-hopping if I was you. Just sit tight until June.

1192192 2011-04-05 20:42:00 With orcon I used to get 2mbps untill they put in a new ADSL2+ cabinet. Now I run at around 9-10mbps. I have some pretty bad noise on the line (horrible house wiring and probably horrible wiring on the road) so hopefully I can fix that in the future.

Meanwhile a GPON fiber cable runs behind my house but I can't access it :( telecom say no! (still in testing)

1192193 2011-04-05 21:08:00 I'm in the country about 5km from a small school. Definitely copper. However the main north/south fibre optic is 2 paddocks away. Pity I can't tap into that. Sigh!!

Thanks for the answers I guess I just hang on
