1191483 2011-04-02 08:01:00 Ok, so I have brought a case and PSU from trademe with an XP (home I presume, could be Pro tho) COA (haven't received it yet). What I'm wondering is, how does the verification work, because isn't the serial registered against the hardware? So if I install it using my components, won't it fail at the verification stage because of the different hardware?

That is, I'm assuming because the serial would have been already used and the pc that it was used from either died or was disassembled.

1191484 2011-04-02 08:05:00 Hmm, after doing more research it seems that selling a COA by itself is illegal, but, this COA was sold as being 'attached' to the case and PSU. Is that illegal? pine-o-cleen (2955)
1191485 2011-04-02 09:05:00 So when you paid for the case and PSU only why would you believe an O/S comes with it?

Did you buy a case and psu or did you buy a COA?

1191487 2011-04-02 09:18:00 So did the case even contain a PSU? And how much did you pay? And are you getting the WinXP CD that matches the COA?

Got to ask heaps of questions to get the actual full story once again!!!

1191488 2011-04-02 09:39:00 Legally, when you use an OEM COA, it is assigned for the original hardware that is in the PC .
Legally it cant be transfered to other hardware .

When the PC was originally built, if you go by the license agreement, the COA has to be attached to the case somewhere that its visible .

If its a retail COA, thats a different story .

1191489 2011-04-02 10:27:00 What you will probably find is that you should be able to carry out verification so long as you install with OEM software.

I assume that your case contains the original hardware and you are going to carry out a repair and consequently upgrade some of the components.

1191490 2011-04-02 12:38:00 The OP does not apparently know what the version of XP the COA relates to if you look at the first post.

"XP (home I presume, could be Pro tho) COA (haven't received it yet)."

It works. You might get a few "Have you uninstalled this from the other PC" questions when you to the activation but it works.

Technically though, it's not legal according to Microsoft to re-use an OEM COA on another PC.

Yes. Microsofts rules. A OEM COA is sold with a PC (the whole PC). And isn't transferable to another PC.
