1191368 2011-04-02 03:31:00 I am thoroughly p off with MS Verification process .

Does anyone know how to extend the verification process in the registry?

Here is why .
You have a Win XP system that needs to have a repair install because there are corrupt files that are preventing it from starting after trying most other repair options .

You repair install XP only to have it demand Verification prior to loading the profile . It will hang of course . Wont let you start in safe mode and wont verify .

I have lost count of the times this has happened . pcworld . co . nz/images/icons/icon8 . gif" target="_blank">pressf1 . pcworld . co . nz

I'm sure there are people at MS that just dream up ways to make a tec life difficult .

1191369 2011-04-02 05:03:00 As silly as it sounds the reason it wont start and allow verification is because of IE8.

When IE8 is installed previously, and a Repair install is done, it doesn't actually remove IE8, some of the files replaced during the repair install are looking for IE to activate - BUT because IE8 was an update, it has been replaced by an earlier version of IE.

IE8 and the earlier versions from the repair install now clash.

Best thing to do, if able is to remove IE8 Before doing the repair install if its at all possible, sometimes its not.

Try this:

Sometimes it works other times it doesn't.

If you're lucky it will open up the activation window and allow you to activate Via Phone, then you can remove IE8 and reinstall it again, as the following will Kill IE completely.

Boot from the XP CD,Select the Recovery Console.

At the Command prompt, C:\Windows>

Type CD ie8\spuninst.
Press ENTER
Type batch spuninst.txt. (you'll see a load of files flashing past)
Press ENTER
Type EXIT
Press ENTER to restart the Computer, all going well you will be able to activate XP.

Then you can repair IE.

1191370 2011-04-02 07:24:00 Ok thanks I was not aware that it was IE8 causing the fault. It makes sense though. I new it was something to do with XP having updated it self but have not been able to locate any info on it. MS have not been very forthcoming when I have called them.

They like to blame everyone else.

1191373 2011-04-04 08:15:00 For WIN XP Search for and read "kill WGA for XP".

For Win7 try "Chew WAT". Worked for me.

1191375 2011-04-04 08:47:00 As you probably know Speedy, there are many instances of
users who have reinstalled the OS, changed their HDD or
whatever, using genuine Windows and find they have an
unwanted authentication problem. There are lots of ways
around this. I have suggested a couple of solutions to try.

1191377 2011-04-04 09:20:00 its probably stuffing up because something is corrupt

From my readings this is not necessarily the case.
Windows doesn't like a fresh install on a PC where
there has been a genuine major hardware change.
So there are genuine reasons for the solutions, where
somebody has paid for a proper copy of Windows
and has only used it on one computer.
Forums are filled with such cases, not just pirates.
