1154352 2010-11-18 21:10:00 So I'm thinking of buying a camera from Parallel Imported... They are selling it for about half the price that Harvey Norman & B&B etc sell at.

Is it worth it?

What happens if something goes wrong?

I know, that nothing will probably go wrong, but for that one in a thousand chance that something does go bad, what happens then?
Is their warranty as good as official retailers?

Surely, one can't pay an extra thousand dollars just for piece of mind? (might as well buy a new camera if something goes wrong, right?)

The CGA still protects me against things going totally wrong doesn't it?
Will the workmanship be decent enough if they do need to fix it?

Thoughts?

[I'm just being paranoid aren't I? :(]

1154353 2010-11-18 21:16:00 I have bought with PI and they are sweet. As far as I know, they endevour to get faulty things replaced or fixed here under a NZ warranty, but may need to send it overseas.

At the end of the day it's just as good as buying from any other NZ shop.

1154354 2010-11-18 21:16:00 I don't know about CGA but b/c it is a shop then I think yes.
Personally if it is that much diff, I would take the risk.

Thing is parallel import is not warranted in NZ, they are sent back overseas or if they have 3rd party technicians in NZ. NZ distributor sourced digicams will be provided with a warranty card, parallel imports are not provided with this. So even if you want to send it back to Japan, if the shops has closed down I don't think you can. Because you lack the authoritative warranty card. This warranty card would contain details of which distributor in the world it was sourced from so that determines who would provide you warranty service.

When I sent my Japan bought camera (in person) back to Japan for servicing I had to send back this warranty card and the shop's receipt.

Not NZ, but increasingly around the world, if you buy an import, the local distributor/authorative repairer won't even repair it even if you are willing to pay. If available you need to seek independent repairers or send it back overseas of who would accept it. Non imports are issued with a warranty card, so if you bought stuff in NZ or UK and have this warranty card, should you need service in the USA or South America, if you can provide these documentations, they will fix it for you for a fee. *digicams are not issued with international warranties generally speaking.

Yes, after 2-3 yrs then it's cheaper to buy another than to repair.

1154355 2010-11-18 21:25:00 It would be interesting to find out how, where, and what contract PI would have with branded items and their suppliers. Because I thought well known branded items would be price fixed globally, and if not, then their must be a contract involved, for pricing, which may not fully involve warranties, say compared to an authorized agent or seller. kahawai chaser (3545)

Yeah right :D
NZ stuff generally speaking might be 20-40% more than USA.
UK is even more.
Look at film in NZ. NZ cost 300% of USA. Lens filters cost 200-300%.

800$ NZ for the same camera [Nikon D3100] according to Amazon.

Parallel Imported want 1200, Expert Infotech want 999 (which seems reasonable) and HN want 1799. That's a 225% markup for HN... Absolute shocker.
Right now I am considering not buying anything at all.

^^ I think she means PI?

What would you guys say about Expert Infotech?

You can read the customer reviews on PriceSpy.

Mostly good reviews but a few negatives such as:

"Terrible experience with this shop. Read all the negative comments here. The people that give them high ratings obviously didn't have to deal with them at all."

and

"Horrible. God-awful. The lousiest customer service it's ever been my displeasure to experience."

and

"So bad I asked for my money back. Despite opting for express delivery 10 days on I am still waiting for my order. Rubbish."

and

"Won't use them again. Hopeless."
