1193446 2011-04-10 23:59:00 Hi, I'm trying to get a Linux(Xubuntu) laptop(Asus) on line for a mate who has no land line and wants a pay-as-you-go stick. Reception in his area seems good for Telecom; but not other makes. Telecom in Thames are not interested in Linux. I'd have to buy their stick and see if I can get it to work. Money back if it doesn't? A 'ho-hum' answer and I can't afford to risk wasteing $150.
I've searched your sites; Telecom isn't popular. Dick Smith wont let me try one as it has to be activated. Once activated they can't take it back.
What if I buy one - plug it in - what need I do next? Has anyone any ideas? Linux these days seems to recognise most things. The Xubuntu is 10.10 and fully up dated. Thanks for any help....sarum

1193448 2011-04-11 00:58:00 Hi sarum I went through the process a while ago and was not happy to find out after I bought a Telecom MF636 stick that zte who make it say they don't support linux. I found this on http://www.zte.co.nz/

"Linux support is not provided by ZTE however some users have developed installation procedures.
Please visit the ZTE AU Forum for further information".

I haven't followed it up as I've been a little busy, I have a voda stick and I do know that the standard voda stick works.. even though it's made by the same company! the down side is the band width is too small on vodafone prepay.
You could try that forum and see what they have to say unless someone here has any good ideas.... let us know how you get on.

1193449 2011-04-11 01:49:00 2Degrees has this pocket WiFi hotspot that will work with any WiFi enabled device (so definitely should work with any laptop):

Not sure if it will work on Telecom XT, I know Telecom's T-Stick works with 2Degrees, so there's a reasonable chance it works the other way around too.

Read the links in my first post.

Most manufacturers don't provide support any linux, so there's nothing shocking in that.

1193452 2011-04-11 03:08:00 Hi sarum I went through the process a while ago and was not happy to find out after I bought a Telecom MF636 stick that zte who make it say they don't support linux. I found this on www.zte.co.nz own one of those sticks myself (the 626 version) - it works perfectly out of the box with most recent kernels. Just plug it in and configure it as a standard dialup connection.

This is generally the case for most such modems these days - it's rare to find one that won't work.

Note that some sticks which emulate a CD drive need to be ejected before they'll show up as a modem, although if you find this annoying the feature can usually be turned off. Edit: usb_modeswitch can also be used to automate this process, without needing to disable the feature.

1193453 2011-04-11 03:09:00 Why does it emulate a CD drive? Agent_24 (57)
1193454 2011-04-11 03:10:00 Why does it emulate a CD drive? So it can auto-install the helper program for sending / receiving txt messages etc, and the Windows driver. You don't actually need the software at all. Erayd (23)
1193455 2011-04-11 03:34:00 Why don't they just give you an actual CD so it doesn't piss you off every time you plug it in... Agent_24 (57)
