1193382 2011-04-10 11:53:00 Hey,

About a month ago my HP Pavilion DV5-1211AX (Vista 32 bit) would no longer shut down. It would remain at the "Windows is shutting down" screen for about half an hour, then the computer would restart showing a blue screen "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE..etc"

It would also no longer recognise any USB device plugged into it (although devices still received power). I had made no changes to the hardware.

In an attempt to fix it I reformatted the computer, and since then it has been fine (for about 4 weeks), until the other day when that exact problem started again.

The only other issue with it is the internal battery has a low storage capacity, and the laptop requires a constant source power to stay on for longer than about 3 minutes.

Any ideas what might be going wrong?

Cheers for any help.

1193383 2011-04-10 12:08:00 If it can still boot into windows get this (www.nirsoft.net) then run it. What does it say, is the cause? It maybe a wireless or USB driver Speedy Gonzales (78)
1193384 2011-04-10 13:24:00 It says the crash was caused by driver ntkrnlpa.exe on the last two occasions, but it has also been hal.dll and tcpip.sys.
I do have an external hard drive connected over wireless..?

1193385 2011-04-10 13:36:00 Get this and run it (support.kaspersky.com). See if you've got a rootkit. Have a read of this (www.faultwire.com). Is SP2 installed? Open a command prompt as admin. Type sfc /scannow. See if it fixes any files Speedy Gonzales (78)
1193386 2011-04-10 21:11:00 I have the DV-5 1009ax, Occasionally on both windows vista (32) and 7 (32 and 64) I get a power state driver BSOD. I'm not actually sure WHY I get this BSOD. its completely random but only occasionally (say once a month)

Could be a fault with HP maybe?

1193387 2011-04-10 22:17:00 Given that it has the same faults with two installations it looks far more likely to be a hardware problem.

It's not easy checking a laptop's hardware but I would certainly, at least, run chkdsk and a mem tester. I'd also be checking for dust build up and fan 'health'.

Ummm, no. Windows update could be re-installing a buggy driver!

1193389 2011-04-11 01:39:00 I ran the TDSSKiller and it found nothing.
Windows Resource Protection "found corrupt files but was unable fix some of them". It said details were included in the CBS.Log, but I was denied access when I attempted to access it via C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

I'm not running SP2, so I'll install that now and get back to you.

Is SP1 installed?? If it isnt you have to install this first (from what I've read, SP1 fixed this issue). before you install SP2. That maybe the reason, files are corrupt
