Interesting read. Antivirus/antispyware can't protect the uninformed (nice way of saying idiots :clap ?

fakeAV infection "required my active, voluntary involvement four different times before the infection took hold"

1192866 2011-04-08 02:12:00 Some people just get scared like that. Happened to my mum once, she was terrified of it and left it open for 4 hours until I got home from uni.

Was just a website that looked like the my computer dialog and it was asking for her to download a scanner or something, but to someone who hasn't been involved with computers very much, it can look very real.

1192867 2011-04-08 02:13:00 Very very interesting. I've been on such a quest lately too, though not largely intentional, so that I can see exactly how the users machines which I'm constantly fixing, get infected.

Great read, thankyou! :)

I love people like that. Much better they do that, than to infect and potentially hose their machine over IMO :clap

Interesting read. "

Especially the bit in the middle of the page that offers:

Are you tired of your slow computer? Well put a stop to it and let RegAce speed it up!

PC Matic boosts internet speed, enhances security, increases stability and maximizes performance.

Hell yeah. never upgrade, magic bits of software will keep it running like a Ferrari forever. The more you download, the faster it gets.
Why bother with anti-malware either? Magic software enhances secuirty too.
Whatever..........

1192871 2011-04-09 00:28:00 "Thoroughly read all dialogs"
That is the one so many users don't do especially if it is similar to one they have seen before.

So what are your conclusions?

I must say that I am also somewhat disillusioned to see so many computers coming in, all with active up to date Anti Virus software on them .

I no longer feel comfortable selling Anti virus software and just recommend MSE .

1192873 2011-04-09 03:55:00 Yep...this dialogue (as described in the article)came up a few days ago on my wife's computer. Fortunately she called me and the first thing I did was to open MSE to see if it had picked anything up. It hadn't so i just closed the dialogue box down suspecting an intrusion of sorts and ran a full scan on MSE. That was all clear! Better safe than sorry :) smurf (6545)
1192874 2011-04-09 04:14:00 I've stumbled across something similar myself while Googling something. After closing all dialogs I ended up having to close Firefox to get rid of it. pcuser42 (130)
