1156346 2010-11-29 22:30:00 I will never take money from the state in way of a benefit. I would rather hurl myself from a cliff.

I guess you won't accept your NZ Superannuation then?
Some people count that as a benefit for some reason.

1156347 2010-11-29 22:33:00 I am sure there are but I have a hatred of the word WINZ

NZ is lucky to have such a great Welfare system! I'm not saying there aren't "bludgers" because I know for a fact there are. But the negative perspective of Work and Income is all media generated - and it's only brought up in the Media when some Client is upset with the decision made from Work and Income. AKA attention seeking bludges.

1156348 2010-11-29 22:52:00 From my observations I find that the people who find it hardest to find employment are the very young (teenagers) or the over 50 year olds.

When I left school in the 1960s I found it easy to find employment. I was unsure what I wanted to do and had five jobs within 18 months. I ended up joining the Army and stayed there for twenty years.

After leaving the Army I tried self employment for a few years but found that there was more profit in working for someone else.

I spent time on the Dole. When I applied for jobs I would either get no reply or a reply saying that over 100 people had applied for the job and I was one of the 99+ unlucky applicants. I attended courses and worked as a full time unpaid volunteer. This gave me a reason to get out of bed and get work experience.

I ended up with two part-time jobs delivering newspapers and driving buses. I now draw my Army pension and work about 30 hours a week driving buses.

From my experience people on the dole should;

Keep applying for jobs.
Be willing to try anything.
Do courses.
Do volunteer work.
Consider part-time work.

You actually get it whether you need it or not so yes you can double dip.

1156351 2010-11-29 23:45:00 Many people are on the dole because of "horrible" incidents in their life and feel vulnerable when portrayed as lazy, a welfare report released today says.

"Many people who spoke or wrote to us were at pains to explain that they had not chosen to be supported by a social security benefit, but that this was a consequence of something horrible happening to their life," he said.

Beneficiaries felt information in the media were portraying them as lazy or fraudulent, which causes them anxiety and feelings of vulnerability.

People were on the dole because of circumstances such as marital relationships that had turned violent, being a solo-parent, caring for a family member with a disability or being born with a health condition that impairs opportunities for paid work, the report said.

What, like having to get up and go to work?

And if you're old enough, you'll still get it, if you're working. When you apply for it. But, if you dont go to WINZ, you wont get it. Since it's not automatic

Well, I hope for your sake that it will be enough to support you in a comfortable lifestyle.

Re that alternate report you mention.
Yes there are many people on the dole, or dpb or sickness benefit due to certain circumtsances.

But I see nothing wrong with WINZ trying to get them into a job in a caring way.
I think that getting them into an approrpiate job for them and their circumstance would be the best thing that could happen to that person.
It would increase their self esteem no end.

But you are NEVER going to see WINZ cutiing people off their benefits, notunless ACT get in, which is never going to happen.
