1192789 2011-04-08 04:28:00 I once bought a component from Jaycar that is a USB to 3.5mm audio/mic jack for about $12. Worked great. Just can't find it on their site. If you haven't worked something out by the time I get home from work I can look it up for you? dpDesignz (15919)
1192790 2011-04-08 07:19:00 This is what I bought but jaycar don't have them anymore I don't think. www.yoga.com.tw If you do some digging you may find one somewhere. dpDesignz (15919)
1192791 2011-04-08 12:23:00 Some USB speakers do have an inbuilt sound card - I have a pair that does.

Others like the ones you got are just powered from the USB port, and don't actually process audio from it.

1192792 2011-04-08 22:25:00 Thanks everyone for your help and a special thanks to Speedy using teamviwer and spent a lot of time trying to help me out.

The problem is now fixed, i feel a bit embrassed but the answer was so simple, but thought it important to post this in case of anyone else in the future having the same nightmare with a Tecra A3 model.
There is a tiny little wheel that adjusts sound externaly in the front of the laptop to the right but facing slightly underneath that is very, very hard to see, it just looks like part of the plastic casing with no features like white markings to make it stand out to be visable by the eye.
I must have knocked this little wheel when moving the laptop to cause the volume to go down to zero.

Anyway thanks everyone and have a great weekend.

1192793 2011-04-08 23:56:00 Well I guess it did turn out to be a hardware problem as you first thought...

My Toshiba also has a volume control like that, I like that it's independent from Windows, allows for finer control - and you can change it no matter what the software might be doing.

1192794 2011-04-09 00:14:00 Oh, cunning! I had a problem like that with an old toshiba notebook. It had a little switch underneath the laptop which locked the power button so it wouldn't turn on (or off)

It belonged to a teacher at my primary school, the desks had lots of staples in them so i'm guessing that she slid the laptop over, locked the power and couldn't turn it on again.

That was my first laptop, the owner said I could have it after I "fixed" it.

My first computer "fix" aged 10 :p
