1156336 2010-11-26 19:52:00 I'm not working and I'm not on the dole. I am however on an incapacity benefit while I wait for ACC to decide whether they will accept my claim. I could work if I had a job in front of a computer but there are none currently available in Nelson and no employer will take me on even if there was work as I might need another operation on my shoulder still waiting to find out.

So as you see I don't have any choice but to be on a benefit, I hate being stuck at home not working so I'm trying to be productive and learn Solidworks in between helping SWMBO around the house and garden using my one good arm which limits what I can do

1156337 2010-11-28 19:46:00 Many people are on the dole because of "horrible" incidents in their life and feel vulnerable when portrayed as lazy, a welfare report released today says.

"Many people who spoke or wrote to us were at pains to explain that they had not chosen to be supported by a social security benefit, but that this was a consequence of something horrible happening to their life," he said.

Beneficiaries felt information in the media were portraying them as lazy or fraudulent, which causes them anxiety and feelings of vulnerability.

People were on the dole because of circumstances such as marital relationships that had turned violent, being a solo-parent, caring for a family member with a disability or being born with a health condition that impairs opportunities for paid work, the report said.

I know the stories, I have seen the research, I simply don't care.
I earn my money and it should stay in my pocket or fund things I use.
Now thats what I would like, but I know its not practical.

I realize a portion of what I pay goes to prop up others, and its better to think of someone like Gary67 getting it than some loser in South Auckland spending it all on drugs, alcohol and cigs.

Personally I have enough problems of my own and within my immediate family as everyone else surely does, I have no need or wish to be saddled either emotionally or financially with someone elses, so I don't care.

Boy I have seen some people really take advantage of the benefit system . These people do actually become lazy after time of doing nothing, I know that I do .

Also most people get their purpose from doing a job, when people get money for doing nothing they eventually have no purpose to their lives which is actually the real reason they have a low self esteem .

Not everyone but a lot of people do, also what I have found is these are the exact type of people that lie black and blue to continue to get their 'Free Money' also with all the free time on their hands they get themselves into things they should not . Alcoholism, drugs and other criminal activities to supplement their 'Free Money' lifestyle .

I believe that there are groups of people that do deserve benefits such as the sick, old, mentally ill, infirm and people that have just been expectantly laid off and need a buffer to find another job .

But all those people that choose being on a benefit as a lifestyle, these are the people that should be forced to work . Really they should not of had the choice of not working in the first place .

1156339 2010-11-29 18:06:00 I will never take money from the state in way of a benefit. I would rather hurl myself from a cliff. prefect (6291)
1156340 2010-11-29 20:56:00 Thing is, would employers hire long term beneficiaries? They would rather hire those straight from uni or tech (as noted by ads on TV). Many NZ family companies hire their own - probably never have interest with WINZ clients, which tend to be from low income groups and foreigners. Perhaps WINZ should research and present reports for the job market segments. WINZ have associations with training schools, private employment agencies, but generally for unskilled or low level employment. kahawai chaser (3545)
1156341 2010-11-29 21:04:00 Too true, I get called by WINZ all the time. Am I interested in hiring bla bla.
Like **** I would hire anyone from WINZ. Whats scary is how did they get my number and like sky people they never give up even when abused.

Beneficiaries do not come in 'one size fits all' . There are many people for whom the benefit is a temporary lifeline . There are also those, such as mentioned by pctek, who are in a situation through no fault of their own .
I also know some, who were given an opportunity to work and vowed they hoped they would never go on a benefit again .
I have also seen examples that have been a disaster for their employer, who then immediately backs off when approached by WINZ .
Have I ever been on a benefit? No!

You can't judge a book by its cover. As Marnie just mentioned there are the legit Clients who are keen to work and require financial assistance. As an employer you have the right to get the CV of the person before you interview and go on to hire.
