1156415 2010-11-25 19:51:00 Currently ...finally thinking of getting broadband.......... with current ISP cos then i dont have to change emails and such. and im ok with them.
this is a big enough step without majorly changing everything else as well.

how does one work out what size to get ? cost or usage? for 5 GB data or 10 GB data.....or somewhere less, inbetween etc.

what does a normal family package size be at? i have 3 people at my house, me, a daughter and a game mad son, - the freebies like stick games, and penguin games, all those cartoony type games....... we dont download at the moment, slow dial up helps stall that idea currently thank fully,

and i dont want to exceed GB limet so do i get a capped or what limit thingy that goes to dial up idea is called?

oh and is it better to just get dial up or phone landline as well? im not with xtra, but my phone is telecom.

help please!

i have been putting it all off cos its in the too hard basket up till now...

1156416 2010-11-25 20:10:00 First of all I would sort out what ISP I want to go with. I would stay away from the likes of Xtra and go for a smaller ISP like Actrix whom I'm with, and rated by Consumer Mag as the best ISP in the country. As for plan size I would start with a small plan of say 3gb a month and if that is to small you can always upgrade to a bigger plan say of 10gb a month. Basically it is trial and error to find what plan suits you best.

1156417 2010-11-25 20:12:00 Depends what you're going to use it for. If anyone is into P2P, you'll probably need more than 10 GB. And a good virus scanner :p

Depends who the ISP is on whether it'll go to dial up speed, or you'll get charged by the MB/GB (once you go over the data limit)

There's 2 of us here, and I set my own limit to 25 GB. Most of the time, we've never gone past 10 GB.

Dialup is an option with most ISP's. Its just used as a backup (in case BB dies). So, it doesnt really matter who you go with. I'm about to go to Telstra, where I've allocated myself 10 GB, and if I go over 10 GB gets added automatically (10 GB is $15 at the mo). One thing, I'll have to ask is if you go over (the next lot of 10 GB), do you get charged for all of the 10 GB if you dont use it

1156418 2010-11-25 20:13:00 I'd go with 10Gb, maybe 5. I guess you'd go with Telecom's total home package, internet and phone line in one package, to get an idea about waht plan you could get try telco's www.telecom.co.nz total home calculator The Error Guy (14052)
1156419 2010-11-25 20:16:00 As Trev says go for a small cap and if you keep exceeding it look at upgrading, also very important look at what they charge if you do go over. Xnet charge $1 a gig where as Vodafone charge a straight $10 for an extra 10Gb so some will sell by the gig and others only in blocks once you go over.

Some will give you option of paying more to keep the speed if you go over while other ISP's will charge nothing if you opt to go to dial up speeds.

Not one of us here has an isp email address we all use gmail so that we don't have to change every time we change isp

1156420 2010-11-25 20:19:00 What I suggest, is get the 10GB if you can afford it.

10 GB really is tiny these days --- OK I do this for a living, but I can easily bring that though in one day - in fact today alone, as of 9.15am, just brought through 1.2 GB.

Having teens in the house, and all of a sudden having faster internet, can guarantee it will take a hammering at first.
i dont want to exceed GB limet so do i get a capped Depends on the ISP / Plan - some will cut the speed back, others will charge you extra $$ if you go over your limit -- CHECK IT OUT - seen it many times people go over their limit and get a shock when the bill comes in.
oh and is it better to just get dial up or phone landline as well Huh ??? if you have dial up you will have a phone line.

Most ISP's have packages , phone/internet etc. if you have high speed, you dont really need dial up as well, unless you want to have a laptop for example with a dial up connection so you can use that if you move about.

1156421 2010-11-25 20:29:00 I would say Beetle a 3Gb -5Gb plan should be heaps for you.
Yes a capped plan is better if you dont want to pay more if you go over your monthly allowance. It just slows down to dial up (its like a "that will learn ya for downloading too much")
If your son starts gaming online a 5Gb plan is probably better depending how often, if you add a bit of youtube/skype you can chew through 3 Gb quite easily
Most places will allow you to upgrade your plan anytime or even downgrade it if it is too much.
I think some places will allow you to keep your current email also?? some one else could confirm this.

1156422 2010-11-25 20:30:00 If “Kinect” (Trustpower) cover your area check with them, they’re great.

http://www.kinect.co.nz/

The deals are good and they carry unused data over to the next month.

1156423 2010-11-25 22:08:00 Last time I didn't download much stuff my usage was about 13GB .

That was for usual stuff like Youtube, Email, Normal program downloads, Windows updates, Linux updates etc etc .

1156424 2010-11-25 22:21:00 Three active users, including daughter/son, use about 45 GB a month . Started on telecom 10GB (but 20 GB promo) . Use telecom, due to "double" promo (so as to easily monitor usage trend with the higher allocation), and seem to have better priced/regular specials for toll calls, which we do a bit .

Gone the whole 40 GB (80 promo) but son helps pay . Got rid of metering tools, just check on telecom site occasionally . $130 all up but got a discounted mobile on a $10 monthly plan; Not sure if due to being on total home plan . Holidays with kids can ramp up, particularly with a few nieces/nephews visiting with online chat to other family members .

Girls like to chat, watch Rhianna, and latest pop singers, etc, and boys like watching rugby online video/sport games, sometimes for hours . Averaged 700 MB to 1 . 2 GB a day during that period . You may need to plan for school breaks, and teens might (always?) want more - e . g . video chats, watching latest videos, online photo/fashion editing, etc .

But need to find out what happens if you go over limit - might be speed reduction, or excess charge . Though other providers had more enticements to offer, but not sufficient bandwidth . That counts with teens I think, perhaps more than speed .
