1193929 2011-04-13 06:44:00 I am trying to install Windows XP SP1 onto a HP Compaq nx6310. However, whenever it loads all the files, it says that there is no hard drive there, or it reports the main partition to be 3021 MB. I am assuming that the drivers for the controller need to be loaded but the laptop does not have a floppy drive, as when I press F6 it prompts for the floppy. bot (15449)
1193930 2011-04-13 06:52:00 Check in the BIOS - does it give the option to set the HDD to IDE, instead of ACHI.

Something to try ---- Try putting the drivers on a USB drive - it "may" detect it and look there instead of a floppy. Other wise you may have to slipstream the drivers into a CD, that should pick them up, but its also a lot of work for one install.

You will find the recovery CD's ( if it came with any) will have the drivers there already.

it reports the main partition to be 3021 MB What size is the actual Drive ? and did it have the partition(s) completely removed before reinstalling ?

If its reading wrong, you may have to create a partition Via some HDD partition software first.Had a few like that - wouldn't see the drive correctly until the partition was created.

Its a 40GB one.

I am using a Volume licensed copy of XP so no recovery CDs as this is at school.

There is an option called SATA native mode in the BIOS

There are no storage drivers

1193934 2011-04-13 07:16:00 Might sound silly - But was there a working or even a corrupted OS on the drive ?

Just in case theres a drive problem.

Also when you go into the BIOS, does the drive actually show up ?

Failing that - do you have a partitioning program to boot from a CD - that should at least confirm the drive can be detected.

There is a working OS onboard, but I want to do a fresh install as it is going to be used as a information computer. There is a (legal) copy of xpsp2 around somewhere which was what had probably been installed in the first place.

1193938 2011-04-13 09:09:00 Please correct if this is wrong -- The current drive has a working OS, BUT when you try to load in a new OS from the CD, it cant see the Drive ?

Edited; heres the driver page (h20000.www2.hp.com) - scroll down to operating system- enhancements - Thats the driver you need ( intel Sata ----) - there are also some instructions on how to install them.

You may need an external Drive if the laptop doesn't have one installed and insists on the drivers. That or slipstream the drivers into the current install CD, thus making a new CD, then they should boot fine.
