1193803 2011-04-12 09:12:00 The netcomm NB6Plus4Wn .

4 port wirelessN ADSL2+ modem/router .

Cheers to chilling for putting me onto it, I finally decided to bite the bullet after my Belkin repeatedly crashed, even when resuming my laptop from sleep and having it connect to the it made it throw a major fit .

Worse still, the past week or so I've been having to power it off, power it on, let it sync, pull the adsl, let it desync, leave it for a few minutes, then plug it back in, to get connected to the internet again .

And leave a desk fan pointed at it when I was on the internet or doing any level of file transferral .

Currently being RMA'ed by PB tech, hopefully they'll either replace it or refund it, if not I'll go through belkin myself . Then I'll either sell it off or use it to connect my xbox to live since normally that involves either moving the modem via long extension or sharing my laptop's wifi which never works that well .

In any case, the netcomm is surprisingly hot . But it hasn't overheated yet . And the extra features it looks to provide might prove useful, what with my CCNA work at AUT helping me work my way round that .

Fingers crossed this one lasts, since the last SMC ($65) and the Belkin that replaced it ($109 with the SMC credited back) and the Huawei that came before all of them didn't do the job .

1193804 2011-04-12 10:11:00 I learned this lesson a long time ago, so now I just use the ADSL Modem to do just that, be a modem. Bought a Cisco 2621 for the internal routing/nat and have a spare ADSL Modem lying around waiting for the current one to die :) With the configuration backed up it really is a 5min job to swap them around. 1193805 2011-04-12 10:27:00 Annoying thing is, the belkin and the SMC both would crash regardless of whether or not anything was happening on the internet at the time. 8ftmetalhaed (14526)

Only time I've felt them hot was when somebody left them on the carpet. They're not generally hot devices by themselves. I just installed another this afternoon and gave it a quick 15 minute *hammering* and it was cold as anything, just sitting on a desk out of direct sunlight.

Where is yours physically located?

Good to hear you finally got one, hope it works out for you :D

1193807 2011-04-12 10:53:00 It's sitting on a phone table next to my computer desk. The top is warm and the vents are slightly more so. PC's running pretty much idle at 40-45 degrees. So yeah not the coldest room although my feet are feeling a bit chilly. 8ftmetalhaed (14526)
1193808 2011-04-12 20:48:00 RTA1200 ADSL Modem (I think) from orcon gets thermonuclear. Cut a hole in it and installed a 12v case fan on it. Runs pretty decent now. was situated on a wooden floor. free of dust so it wan't bad circulation. The Error Guy (14052)
1193809 2011-04-12 21:10:00 How warm is it underneath the modem? I found that when that got hot (From being left on a carpeted floor, who does that?!) that would mean trouble...

Otherwise, I'd just keep an eye on it, but wouldn't really worry about it.

1193810 2011-04-12 22:15:00 I have mine sitting on my DVD player and it gets quite warm. I left some CDs on it one day by accident and they got quite toasty by the time I took them off :D

Overall though, it hasn't overheated and has been rock solid compared to the old beast I had.
