1158669 2010-12-04 10:02:00 Hi, I have secured some cheap tickets almost too good to be true. I have mostly dealt with single room hostels or Inns as I have preferred more travel days and and so I could do more trips.

I am off for just a week, half of that I am going to a place I already been to, the other place I may go to a international hotel. Also due to the temperature, it's SE Asia and it's the hottest of the hottest season.

1. Re: the dress code, am I unable to use the dining service? I won't be taking any corporate wear. Not sure if a single traveller would feel comfortable anyway but .. but breakfast should be fine with jeans or travel pants?

2. In terms of tipping, is that $5-10 and when do I need to? The hotel has a discretionary service charge they add to the bill. Like checking in/our, the guy who takes your bag to your room, and room service ...

3. Some countries like Singapore who do not recommend tipping as I read, I just shouldn't right. Look kinda stupid do I just say thanks?

4. Continental breakfast. Is this provided to your table or is it help yourself on the long table? I take it breakfast is ok for single travellers right (like those on business)?

5. I guess breakfast is added to your bill, do you just sign a piece of paper, what about other meals? Obviously I know room service would just be added to your checkout invoice.

Thanks for your help.

Right

1) Most international hotels have a number of restaurants from casual to formal. If there is a dress code it should be outside the door of the restaurant. There is of course room service or the local food sellers.
2)Depends of the country. But if you think someone has gone out of their way to help then yes tip them.
3)Yes smile and say thanks.
4) Depends on the hotel. Some is help yourself others you order from a menu. Anyone staying in the hotel is allowed to have breakfast.
5) They will ask you if you would like the meal added to your hotel bill
you may need to sign a piece of paper.

Remember international hotels are for anybody not just business types.
There will be lots of information about the services of the hotel in your room. either in a folder or on a channel on the TV.

Have fun.

1158671 2010-12-04 14:57:00 2 . In terms of tipping, is that $5-10 and when do I need to? The hotel has a discretionary service charge they add to the bill . Like checking in/our, the guy who takes your bag to your room, and room service . . .
I always carry my own stuff, so I can't say for porters .

3 . Some countries like Singapore who do not recommend tipping as I read, I just shouldn't right . Look kinda stupid do I just say thanks?
Singapore . . . They usually add 10% to your bill . 10-15% unless they have a service charge . Even then it would be polite to top, but in the end who gives a crap, if you can't afford it, don't .

4 . Continental breakfast . Is this provided to your table or is it help yourself on the long table? I take it breakfast is ok for single travellers right (like those on business)?
Almost always a buffet .

5 . I guess breakfast is added to your bill, do you just sign a piece of paper, what about other meals? Obviously I know room service would just be added to your checkout invoice .

Breakfast is usually included lunch and dinner are not .

1158672 2010-12-04 20:24:00 Have you tried to Google your accommodation to see if there is any information on their website ... if they have one. SP8's (9836)
1158673 2010-12-04 21:01:00 Thanks guys . . .

They do have a website but they don't go into such details .
Haven't booked it yet as it's many months away . Looking at such like Shangrai-La, Traders, Intercontinental, Mariott etc . . for a few days or just 2 .

Breakfast might be fine for a single traveller but dinner might look weird eh . . . there are plenty of eateries outside .

1158675 2010-12-04 22:17:00 Which country are you planning on booking the hotel in.........? that would be a good start. Singapore ?

International hotels such as the one's you mentioned are for anyone, if you can afford it, you can stay there.

Tipping is personal choice. If it is already included in the bill, then only tip extra if you think you got really good service.

Porters will expect a tip and will try hard to carry your bags for you even if you would rather do it yourself.

Don't get too generous / over the top if tipping. I have seen some people tip way in excess which can lead to its own problems.

Breakfast. Usually included in the room charge but not always, sometimes breakfast will be a separate charge as not everyone wants a hotel breakfast.

Breakfast can range from a menu to a buffet, depends on hotel and which resturant you go to.

Lunch and Dinners are separate charges.

If you will be in Singapore, eat out on the street, depends on what you like of course but it is safe enough. I always eat from the street vendors when I am in Singapore unless I am forced to eat with clients.

Dress code. You will probably get away with neat casual clothing in most hotel resturants. Don't wear jandals/throngs or shorts, if you are wearing a t.shirt, ensure it isn't offensive, probably better to have a light weight short sleeved business style shirt.

Considering the time of year you might be travelling, ensure you get plently of liquids. Bear and Wine and Energy drinks is not liquid in that sense.......
Plain water, upto one bottle a hour if required if outside for any length of time, avoid drinking chilled water, room temp water is better.

Good indication that you might be short on liquids other than head aches and dizziness, when you pee, if light coloured you have been drinking enough water, if dark colour, you need to drink water as soon as possible.

Ensure you know when booking the room what currency you are being charged in as well, some might charge you in USD rather than local. If paying by credit card, some hotels will add on a credit card fee, can be upto another 7% or more.

Why would eating dinner on your own be weird ? There would be business types who would be eating on their own as well.

May be just too self conscious. Breakfast is ok but dinner :o Oh .. who's this loner there, haha. I'll probably just eat out for dindin.

I am sure there are ways, but I arn't doing that :D

I been to Kuala Lumpur before so got a decent place there for not much. Will be in Singapore as that's how I get back, it's to KL via SG. But since these 2 places is not that much to see for myself, I may get Air Asia and hop over to Bangkok for 2 nights. Only away for a week. The specials were too good not to take up. Wasn't planning of going to SE Asia. It's in May 2011 so it's really hot. I was in KL and Brunei last year June.

Thanks PinoyKiwi and everyone else :thanks:
