Did you even read perfects post?

I didn't start the personal attack.

Classic your post highlighted so you assume the attack was on you and not in support of the comments made by you about the comments of someone else.

***This is not a personal attack just an observation***

I luv the internet where control is in the hands on the person with control. But even then they have no control when it is taken to a place they have no control. Censorshipis everywhere we just can not accept or see it!

Thank god you do not live in North Korea!!!

1158080 2010-12-04 21:05:00 This appears to be a well written article on the pros and cons of Wikileaks.

www.bbc.co.uk

In my opinion anyway.

1158081 2010-12-04 21:19:00 I think it will change the whole concept of diplomat speech where they say stuff behind peoples and countries backs.
You could make the cables more secure but sooner or later a disgruntled worker is going to save them and send them to wiki.
The cat is out of the bag, the horse has bolted its going to be almost impossible to keep stuff secret now.

1158082 2010-12-05 22:53:00 Some of you have trouble coming to terms with the concept of security and confidentiality.

Say for example, a country has a new leader elected, could be a small benana, (without bananas), would be republic, in the South Pacific.

The Secretary of State, ask the local ambassador for an assessment of the new leaders - Not a glowing picture seen through rose tinted spectacles, but a frank truthful assessment -
The ambassador's assessment is - he is wealthy, a political opportunist, the general consensus is he is a bit of a W*ank*r - and you can't trust him - it happens to be true.

Why would a US not want this released after all it is the truth - well they have to work with this individual, even though they would rather not - leaking the information into the public domain has just made working with him very much harder -
The information is privileged and confidential -
The person who leaked it, has at best breached the trust of his position and should be fired with total loss of benefits - his actions in some circumstances could also be construed at treason, and when they catch him or her, I hope it they. Hang the b*stard.

How would all the Kiwis who think these actions are OK, reconcile this with there opinions on freedom of information, if it caused heavy casualties among NZ troops serving in Afghanistan?

1158083 2010-12-05 22:55:00 That kind of scenario wouldn't apply in every case though Agent_24 (57)
1158084 2010-12-05 23:02:00 Agreed, but it has in all too many cases - The assessment of the British conservative party leadership, is true, unflattering, and has been very counter productive.

Diplomatic mail whether by document or electronic has always been confidential - and that means not for public dissemination - pure and simple - some employee(s) of the US State Department are guilty of gross breaches of security, and deserve to be severely punished, and have their files closed "without prejudice".

1158085 2010-12-06 02:31:00 If that's the case, where some kind of transmission / document could cause casualties in the event it ever was leaked at a later stage, then for the better part it shouldn't be said. Simple.

The US is just p*ssed because they had an exclusive club where they could say whatever they wanted and get away with it, but now (as mentioned) the cats outta the bag and they're screwed ...

1158086 2010-12-06 19:39:00 Like Hitler Wikileaks started out with good intentions, but just like him they let the power loose and find that it now controls them instead of the other way round. With disastrous results for Hitler and will be the same for Wikileaks they have just gone too far to be able to retain any semblance of credibility. gary67 (56)
1158087 2010-12-07 02:49:00 Whoever the other American leakers are, there is a high probability that they will get a fair trial, with a competent defence attourney, and with the right of umpteen appeals.

If, a Russian or a Communist Chinese or a North Korean or a Iranian or a Syrian Government employee had committed similar act of treachery, we all know that he would not be queuing up for prison meals long term, nor would he be set free.
