1157521 2010-11-30 21:46:00 I can't stand it when someone says they need a computer for photoshop/converting video files, then everyone jumps in and suggests a high end graphics card.

Offloading to the GPU only works with certain video formats, and even then only provide real benefit in certain situations, ie not all photoshop operations benefit from the GPU.

1157522 2010-11-30 21:55:00 The 1st video card I bought was a vesa bus diamond virge 3mb card for Doom2, back in about 92\3?

Ive still got my 3dfx 32mb add on card running opengl, it used to be attached to a S3 virge with 16mb ram i think

1157523 2010-12-01 05:08:00 I'm a PC fanboy.
It has 2GB. It beats the pants of yours.
It's a HD5970.

Hah, but I know it's not just about VRAM. In fact you really need to compare two similar cards (ATI vs Nvidia for instance) and even then, depending what you're playing, how you are playing it (resolution, effects and so on).

But whatever, I'll just go admire my PC and be glad I don't own a MAc.

You see that is an O-masing gfx card. I'm talking about how every company now pumps out low end 2gb and 1gb cards jsut so people think they are good.

1157524 2010-12-01 05:48:00 You will probably find you are cpu limited at your resolution with the 5970

Yes there are a few games that are CPU intensive rather than GPU. But I play none of those.
And I laugh when people think (with those exceptions - like JJJJJ and MSFSX) who think having the top CPU and a medium GPU is cool.

Not.

Nor do I care.

That's okay, I LOL at people who think a small LCD and a top end GPU are cool...

1157526 2010-12-02 01:06:00 I find it mildy irritating when people compare graphics cards by purely memory size as well but lets be fair here, for the non tehnically minded trying to choose a graphics card the memory size is the only consistant spec across all cards that can be compared.

Seriously the rest of the specs are well beyond the understanding of many people, I think maybe graphics cards should have a standardised performance number that the unitiated can use to form a basic Idea of relative performance. In the real world though the manufacturers would keep adding categories to to any such number to try and convince us that this or that feature makes it better than everyone else.

1157527 2010-12-02 01:11:00 What makes me laugh is people that ran out and spent truck loads on say a HD5970 that have purchased a multi GPU solution sold as 2GB, not realising the card is effectively only 1GB mirrored and likely to struggle in DX11 at high resolution and of course future games.

ATI's next gen out in a few weeks, wonder what Santa will bring me, Nvida or ATI :P

Santa's bringing you a new card?....

Some interesting results here with the 5970 v 580 OCéd....the 2x1Gb limit hurts the 5970 in high res too, and many of the benchmarks appear to be CPU limited when comparing the 2 cards

nah we knew that.
But that's OK, we'll sell it and buy the next whatever pointless expensive GPU and play games on our small LCD and mid-range CPU.....
