1193656 2011-04-11 12:09:00 So when people say that it happens during the install, I do what exactly?

I currently have the machine switched off. The installation disk for Windows 7 64-bit is in the primary optical drive.

I switch the computer on - then what? :devil

1193657 2011-04-11 12:10:00 Get the drivers from the site extract them to floppy or USB flash drive (if this works that is), chuck it in, it loads them. Have you enabled RAID in the BIOS?

Watch this (www.youtube.com). Fast forward it to 4:53... After you select custom, load driver is on the bottom left

1193658 2011-04-11 12:19:00 I was just thinking. Is it not telling that I still get exactly the same thing happening even if I decide not to go for setting up a RAID0 Stripe? Is there any other possible explanation for this failure to install? Perhaps the whole thing about setting up a RAID array is just a red herring? MasterofZack (11276)
1193659 2011-04-11 12:22:00 Just noticed your last question Speedy Gonzales. Yes I have established my desire for a RAID array in BIOS. MasterofZack (11276)
1193660 2011-04-11 12:34:00 OK, I've now viewed the ultimatehandyman video on YouTube. Me thinks that I am going to have take another, & closer, look at the BIOS. I need to make sure that I haven't missed something that the manual - that came with my mobo - may have neglected to mention. MasterofZack (11276)
1193661 2011-04-11 13:44:00 I have not bothered to look at the motherboard Manual or diagram for your rig yet. But are you sure SATA cables are plugged in to the correct places on the M/B. and in the correct order? Snorkbox (15764)
1193662 2011-04-11 15:35:00 Well - it wasn't my preferred system, but - after attempting to install Windows 7 Ultimate one more time after mucking around in the BIOS; & then attempting to run the live version off CD/DVD of various forms of Linux, all without success, I have finally been able to install openSUSE Linux instead!

Maybe I'll run with it for a while to see what it's like, I'll try again with something else. :punk

1193663 2011-04-11 23:09:00 It's already been said but perhaps not explained. If you set your hard drive mode to either RAID or AHCI in the BIOS then windows usually requires drivers to be installed as people have mentioned before windows can start. A curious quirk is the installer often detects the drive and copies files to it, but can't actually boot from it.

You can set it to IDE mode and install windows but this will stop you using RAID or the features of AHCI ( hot swap, trim, etc ). There are workarounds to install the drivers afterwards if you can't get them to install during install.

What I did to enable AHCI mode on my PC after using it in IDE mode for 6 months (same applies to RAID) was swap the boot drive to a different controller (not all boards have this) and then change the setting in BIOS. On reboot all the ports were redected and drivers loaded.

1193664 2011-04-12 02:50:00 OP - I find it easier to install 1 HDD 1st, that way the system gets the system reserved partition on same drive as O/S...however if windows sees the RAID drive when selecting the o/s parttion I believe you dont need raid drivers as it has already seen the drive!...If it doesnt see the raid drive, then you need the drivers...
I also onto the o/s then just use Intel rapid storage to create raid arrays from within windows..

1193665 2011-05-03 03:07:00 It works! It wooooorrrrrks! :punk Wooooooo hooooo!

It would seem, according to a friend of mine that came over to see the box itself, that trying to install OpenSUSE onto the machine had rectified the problem. According to him (he has a preference for Linux OSs), sometimes Windows needs a swift kick up the backside to get it to behave itself.

Finally succeeded in installing Windows after a fair bit of grief; first the problem of the first several attempts to install Windows failing to get anywhere significant; then attempting to use the bootable disks of x2 or x3 different flavours of Linux straight from DVD; then trying to fully install onto the system OpenSUSE, only to find that it wouldn't accept the password that I had entered during setup :illogical! So that was where things were @ when the friend of mine turned up to see the box itself. I explained to him my experience and then went to demonstrate what, until that moment, had been my experience trying to install Windows. Lo & behold, Windows suceeded in installing itself :banana!
