2011-04-19 08:24:00 | Hi there, My daughter's boyfriend's PC sound output didn't work - it was a computer he had been given to use that runs XP, home made by his mate years ago. It has a MSI motherboard, KT6V-SR / MS-7021 and is running a low spec AMD with (hold your breath here ... ) 256 megs of RAM. I thought at first to check that on board sound was enabled, then to install drivers for the VIA AC97 sound chipset if not installed. Now the USB ports don't work - at all. This is what happened: * Re-booted into BIOS to check that onboard sound was enabled. It was. * Saved and exited the BIOS. * Keyboard and mouse didn't operate, couldn't log in to Windows... * Found a ps2 keyboard and mouse, hard shut down and reboot * Back into the BIOS * Made sure that USB and Legacy support was enabled, it was. * Saved and exited again, back into XP, able to log in using the ps2 ports * Checked device manager, all USB posts, hubs and devices showing as no issues * Uninstalled all USB ports, windows finds them again and re-installs but still they don't work * Tried a system restore - no joy * Tried finding a chipset driver without any luck. All sites lead to dodgy "sign up for access" downloads * Plugged a USB bracket out of my PC onto a set of spare USB pins on the otherboard (not a PCI card). No go there either. * Installed AC97 sound drivers. Sound works perfectly. It seems to me that the USB sockets themselves on the motherboard have fried... but it's affected all - it has 4 on the back and two on the front, the back ones are direct onto the mb (in a box that contains the ethernet socket and that works ok), the front ones are powered from pins elsewhere on the mb. Seems strange to me that all have gone? The fact that device manager doesn't indicate any hardware issue is perplexing. Anyone help here? We could just get a PCI card and use that but as it's a loan PC he doesn't want to spend any money on something that so low value, but he and I have responsibility to give it back how we found it (ie with working USB functionality)! Thanks in advance :)

2011-04-19 08:46:00 | Gidday Yep, SP3 is on it and I did not come across that link before (yes that's the mobo). I'll grab the 4 in 1 chipset drivers from there and see how I get on. Thanks Speedy

2011-04-19 10:21:00 | Back again.. no joy I'm afraid. The 4 in 1 driver installed and everything works fine apart from USB. I'm on the PC now. Threre's also a USB 2.0 patch on the site which gives me two files, viaehcx1.cat and VIAEHCX1.INF, which I tried to point the system to during a driver update process, which made no difference. Any other ideas?

2011-04-19 10:28:00 | Do the front ports look damaged. IME when you get that the usb controller is usually fried from a short. The fix is to buy a cheap usb pci card. | Alex B (15479) | |
2011-04-19 10:29:00 | USB Controller chip is probably fried. I've had the same problem, also an MSI board, where everything worked perfect except for all the USB ports. Nothing I tried could get them working again except a PCI card with its own USB ports.
