1195558 2011-04-19 08:01:00 Hi all,

I am aware that this issue may have been brought up so many times that no one bothered to count, but I still don't really get what's going on .

My laptop, running Win7 Home Basic on i3 370m and 2G RAM, is taking more than 2 minutes to start up . Compared to 40 seconds, which is the time taken 1 month ago, I don't really know what or why is the computer taking so long starting up . However, after the startup it runs normally .

Things I've tried:
Optimisation
> Ran CCleaner . No signs of improvements
> Ran IObit Smart Defrag on C: . no signs of improvements
> Ran TuneUp Utilities and did a whole lot of things (including defragging D:, defragging registry, cleaned out registry and unused files), The computer performance might have improved marginally; or it didn't improve at all .
> Looked up diagnostics-performance section in Event Manager . It told me that MSSE and mcc . exe are causing major slowdowns (by seconds) .
> So I removed MSSE . Startup didn't seem to be any faster .
> I installed Avast! . Didn't seem to slow it too much, either .

Security
> I ran a full scan on MalwareBytes, and removed three trojans . System speed seems to improve, but not by very much .
> I'm currently running a full scan on Avast!, hoping it would find a few new surprises . Currently it's 30% in and no infected files found so far .

Corruption
> I've also ran sfc /scannow in commandline, under administrative powers . No corruption found .

This post is quite long, but any help would be appreciated . Slow startup times on Windows always seems to trouble me, and can anyone please explain what are the causes of Windows slowdown? Been looking on the internet and it's always the same old (e . g . junk files, fragmentation, virus, etc . )

Thanks in advance .

1195559 2011-04-19 08:23:00 Get rid of Tuneup utils its hopeless. Post a hjt log so we can see whats installed. And run ccleaner. Go to tools / uninstall save to txt file. Paste that text file here Speedy Gonzales (78)
1195560 2011-04-19 09:13:00 Why would you want to remove MSSE and replace it with something inferior like Avast?
On here most people recommend MSSE over Avast. It will be interesting to check out the HJT if you post one.

1195561 2011-04-19 09:29:00 Try starting the laptop in safe mode - keep tapping F8 on startup, select safe mode. If its a software or driver problem it will start a lot faster.

Hope its not like the W7 I have here at the moment, customers laptop, 11 months old, HDD has loads of bad sectors (drive failing) - very slow to start.

1195562 2011-04-19 09:36:00 +1 for wainuitech's suggestion that it could the hard drive.
Customer laptop in the workshop today, running Vista, that was very slow.
Turns out HDD has bad sectors and needs to be replaced.

@lakewoodlady: I was getting caught up between Avira and Avast, and obviously Avast's a puffery.
@wainuitech: Safe mode starts a LOT faster, but I can't pin down to which programs are causing the most delay.
Also, I had some problems with chkdsk a few weeks ago; when I schedule it on startup, it will give messages like "An unspecified error occurred (followed by a string of characters; error description?)", but the problem seems to have gone away after MBAM took out the trojans; I'll give chkdsk another try in a moment.

Rather than Windows chkdsk have a look in the BIOS and see if there is a HDD test utility in there and run that instead.
Will give a better indication if the HDD is faulty.

1195567 2011-04-19 10:06:00 Unfortunately I don't remember anything that checks for HDD bad sectors on my computer.

Seems like Windows Disk Check has found an error. Something about Bitmap on MFT.

Sorry for the fact that I didn't reproduce the exact words, because my system's actually in Chinese (OEM came with my laptop). Which explains where Home Basic came from (Western Worlds don't sell them).

I'll reboot with chkdsk /f and see how it goes (I always tried to do chkdsk -f and Windows keep giving me errors; too much Linux?)
