1195519 2011-04-19 06:35:00 Guy’s I’ve got here a very old but faithful IBM Desktop (before the tower case) which needs a bigger HDD.

Now we have the Windows XP Disk, but we don’t have Motherboard Drivers and other Peripheral Drivers.

I figure finding them and downloading them from the Internet could be a nightmare, so I wondered how you guys that do this all the time handle the situation?

Can I copy the Drivers Folder from the existing HDD and after a clean installation of Windows copy the contents into the new Drivers Folder? I guess one would need one or two other folders as well and rely on Windows to install the drivers once directed to them.

All suggestions appreciated. :thanks

1195520 2011-04-19 06:40:00 I use the free drivermax to save all the drivers before formatting and installing, then install it on the new system and import all the drivers again.

Get it from here;

1195522 2011-04-19 07:09:00 X 2 for driver Max BUT with one exception - I never import them back in, simply because in some cases its been damaged drivers causing the need for a reinstall in the first place. Importing damaged drivers kind of has a negative effect.

Have you looked on IBM's site ? There have been some real old IBM's that I've worked on and they usually keep driver downloads for just about every model they ever made.

What is the model you have ?

Also have a look in the C: drive, sometimes in a hidden folder are the actual drivers - other times they aren't hidden

1195523 2011-04-19 07:56:00 You could just clone the drive if the current installation is working just fine, you could use either of Seagates or WD's free tools to do this as only one the drives whether the old or new has to be there's gary67 (56)
1195524 2011-04-19 21:55:00 Thanks guy’s, I’ll try Drivermax and see how I go . :thumbs:

Wainui, the model is IBM NetVista MT-M 8305-RNA and I feel the drivers are probably OK as the real reason to start again is to install a larger HDD .

Gary, yes I could image it but I thought a nice fresh install after all these years would be preferable .

Anyway, I’ll try Drivermax and if we stuff up we’ll be back to looking on the Internet .

I’ll keep you posted . :)

1195525 2011-04-19 22:46:00 Double Driver (www.labnol.org) might help, it scans, sorts, and backup in categories. kahawai chaser (3545)
