1159126 2010-12-16 04:31:00 Pctek, it could well be something with the physical wiring in that case. Do you pay the $$ each month for maintenance on your line? Might be worth getting a tech out to take a look, coz it looks like almost everything else is ruled out.

If you don't have maintenance, ring them up, sign up for it, THEN tell them you want a tech to come out (Thats what we've done with a friend before, she rang up, got it, then got the tech to come out free).

1159127 2010-12-16 04:43:00 Telecom Wiring Maintenance insurance is a good idea at a cost of only $3.06 per month ($36.72 a year) because without it they charge:

* minimum diagnostic fee $81.00 incl GST
* labour per 15 minutes $16.88 incl GST
* the cost of any materials

If you're like me and call them as often as I do, it's much much cheaper to pay the 'insurance' :D

1159128 2010-12-16 20:03:00 haven't tested another modem yet. haven't finished their 3 days of tracerts and pings either.
Husband is capable of testing the line, but yes, I hadn't gotten around to cancel the wiring maintenance charge automatically put on my account by them.

1159129 2010-12-20 02:11:00 Sweet, routers arrived today, now to give them a blast.

Really looking forward to installing Gargoyle on the Asus WL-520GU and having some fun with the flatmates :devil

Meh, I don't have issue with them using torrents, but thrashing the network when they get home till they sleep is rather annoying with game pings hitting 1k+ ms. Who would think to download at night when everyone is stacking z's?

Good times :D

1159130 2010-12-20 02:17:00 Restrict their machines internet access to only certain hours, or, just give them a per-device "cap" that resets monthly and throttle them back to 64k when they go over :devil Chilling_Silence (9)

Thats exactly my plan :devil

I did laugh a little when I saw this (www.gargoyle-router.com) picture under the screenshots section of the documentation.

+1 for good restriction names :devil

4 people in the flat, limit the speed during the evenings fairly, and data caps by week, that way no one is screwing the others over, will be good, can't wait to set this bad boy up.

1159132 2010-12-20 02:59:00 Easiest way is to throttle all traffic on ports over 1000 like nobodies business, then if they want something specific such as a game or VoIP, then yeah .... They come see you to have it added! Chilling_Silence (9)

Exactly, mate, I can't wait to start playing around with this router + Gargoyle.

Going to be very nice to game in the evenings with a sub 500ms ping again. :D

1159134 2010-12-20 08:25:00 Yeah I get annoyed if I game with pings over 50ms nationally (DotA), or 250ms internationally (LOTRO)... It rarely goes over those values. Chilling_Silence (9)
1159135 2010-12-20 20:39:00 Have you had a chance to setup the routers yet DH? :drool wratterus (105)
