1194888 2011-04-18 01:51:00 As an alterantive you can get itx based systems that bolt onto the back of the monitor, giving you the benefits of an all in one while still being upgradeable and not being tied to the monitor if it fails. I have seen these prebuilt and as parts and there are some very nice full featured itx boards available these days.

Just a thought.

1194889 2011-04-18 09:49:00 so i bought one of those pc mags that have sample builds in. It was an aussie mag and then i grabbed a couple of options and priced them up. Are parts over there significantly cheaper ? One system i looked at was just over AU$700 which at today's exchange is just over NZ$900 but priced over here it came to $1250 !!!

Big difference.

1194890 2011-04-18 10:47:00 Yeah New Zealand loves to rip people off with things... Agent_24 (57)
1194891 2011-04-18 10:52:00 But did you price it up using the same make and model parts? I would not compare an MSI board with an Asus or Gigabyte board for example. Snorkbox (15764)
1194892 2011-04-18 12:15:00 Yeah, MSI is better ;) :p Agent_24 (57)

Same same (with my limited knowledge anyway).

Same manufacturer, model number etc. was shocked to say the least but then you have to mortgage your house to buy milk and bread over here these days it seems....

1194894 2011-04-18 21:41:00 If it was me, you are tight in space, get a laptop, if need be you could pick up a LCD in the future . Laptop just makes more sense when you go out and travel . Or even taking it to your patio . . . .

IMO, Netbooks don't compare with all in one units . All in one units would be somewhat faster than laptops as laptops use mobile CPUs .

At the end of the day the all in one units are just appliances, an LCD might only cost $200-300, and it's new, used stuff do depreciate, even if it still suits your needs, it's outdated . By spending $200-300 you could get a new LCD at any given time to go with your new computer . So by getting a proper PC from the LCD side doesn't really save you much .

But yeah . . . like someon'e kitchen computer, we still have a P3 laptop, screen is dead, it surfs the net ok, and runs Office 2000 and acts as a print server .

1194896 2011-04-18 21:54:00 i don't particularly like Acer that much but bro has a Acer Netbook, v good price of $520 instead of $850 for an ASUS (bro wanted HDMI and a larger reso screen than XGA). only been a month or so .. but no problems whatsoever. it has a bootable recovery backup thingy and it works - external HD we use, think it also works on USB sticks.

some people have Acer laptops here and they have had it for some yrs, i know colleagues with it too ....

if room isn't so tight, maybe build own computer for $1000-1200 and get a Netbook at $400-550.

1194897 2011-04-18 22:18:00 if you are looking at a all in one or a Notebook/Netbook combo - graphics isn't gonna be high up there - i don't play games so i am one of those builtin graphic believers and you save money too. if in the future you might want to play a bit of games you can add one in, many support PCI Express once you disable the builtin module.
