| 1160189 | 2010-12-09 22:31:00 | Hard man with banning cars over 10 years old. Why? It's less than that in Japan.... (OK they're not banned, they just need such thorough inspections it doesn't make it financially viable to keep the vehicle on the road - but it's essentially the same thing) |

| 1160190 | 2010-12-09 22:34:00 | Hers my guide to fixing the road toll. Price people off the road, Just like they have done with motorcycles.$3000 a year for rego should do it, and triple the price of petrol Ban all cars older then 10 years off the road Make the training system real, Its a joke. Provide real training and lets say three months of closely monitored driving, and if you fail then thats your lot, No license, ever. You're not fit to be on the road Repeat training every two years Mandatory jail time for driving offenses that put others at risk, such as crossing yellow lines. 2 weeks in the slammer, no court date, no going home, straight from the car to the jail, see you in two weeks where you will be presented with a bill for the cost of your sentence. Charge people with murder when they kill others with their cars. Micro-fining people and sending them on their way doesn't work, The proof of this is on the front page of nearly every newspaper. Fark that, Number three is all i agree with there, you wouldnt get my vote. I dont think there is any thing wrong with the status quo |

(OK they're not banned, they just need such thorough inspections it doesn't make it financially viable to keep the vehicle on the road - but it's essentially the same thing) Agreed, the old cars like classics and vintage are not the problem . Leave them alone:angry |

Not counting xraying of subframes for corrosion I think NZ WOF check pretty good. I gave my camper what I thought was a real good check over before taking it for COF and they failed it on 2 things I didn't notice. An engine mount starting to unbond itself and a little mark under under the circlip of one universal which is indicative of the cap spinning on the cross. |

I dont think there is any thing wrong with the status quo My point exactly, people will accept road death in order to keep it easy for them. Personally I'd install high speed trains between towns/cities and plant grass where the roads are. People could ride scooters on bike strips within the city boundaries. |

Price people off the road, Just like they have done with motorcycles . $3000 a year for rego should do it, and triple the price of petrol Ban all cars older then 10 years off the road Make the training system real, Its a joke . Provide real training and lets say three months of closely monitored driving, and if you fail then thats your lot, No license, ever . You're not fit to be on the road Repeat training every two years Mandatory jail time for driving offenses that put others at risk, such as crossing yellow lines . 2 weeks in the slammer, no court date, no going home, straight from the car to the jail, see you in two weeks where you will be presented with a bill for the cost of your sentence . Charge people with murder when they kill others with their cars . There is a very strong element of 'do as I say but not as I did' in your approach though Metla . Very few of us have a blameless record on the road; by your own admissions you don't, and I'll be the next to admit that I don't either . I've done some things on the road that make me suck my breath between my teeth and wonder what the hell I was thinking (or not thinking) and how on earth I got away with it, but I've also been the victim of an innocent mistake by another motorist and I'll carry the consequences of their error to my grave . Thirty years on, I've just paid over $10,000 for corrective treatment for ongoing effects and I'll be paying until the day I die, and ACC doesn't want to know . The fatal flaw in your approach is that there are already a plethora of unregistered, unlicensed and uninsured people out there on the roads, some of whom don't always pay for their fuel either, and your ideas, forthright and sterling as they may be, would just make that worse, while at the same time stopping many people from exercising their legitimate right to use the public highways that they have paid for and continue to pay to be maintained (the last word I use very loosely) . Taking all cars over 10 years old off the road won't make a worthwhile reduction in death and injury on the road, and I challenge you to support that proposal with any statistics to show that vehicle age alone is an identifiable and significant statistic in the road toll . I would support compulsory formal driver training, but that won't catch or stop those who don't bother to get a license either . Driver education would be a good start, including compulsory defensive driving lessons but even if introduced into the school curriculum it would not impact on the lawless and irresponsible hard core whom I believe would simply carry on their merry and lawless way . We can improve driving skills and make roads and vehicles safer, but we cannot easily stop the lawless minority without taking a leaf out of the US system where the number of police vehicles on the road is enormous compared to here, if you don't have your insurance papers in the vehicle you are in deep doo-doo, and they don't muck around if they catch you breaking the law . Just letting one wheel stray onto the fog line (white line delineating the RH edge of the lane) will get you pulled up and fined, even thought there may be a metre or more of sealed surface beyond that . Best you think again and find some workable solutions, get elected to parliament, become the Minister of Transport then Metla-ise the system . I'm not sure I'd vote for you, but then again, I might surprise both of us . Cheers Billy 8-{) |
