1160019 2011-01-06 18:19:00 Nomad, sorry to hear you were disappointed with the food, but after 4,200 quakes you were lucky to get any food !

Getting a bit p i s s e d off with the damn aftershocks.

Compliments of the season at any rate.

1160020 2011-01-06 19:51:00 Well Nomad, all of those criticisms of the Foo San went straight over the top of my head - I wouldn't have noticed any of those things and therefore I would have probably still enjoyed the kai!

Foo San reminds me of many places I ate at in China, and I enjoyed them all as well as Foo San. Presumably the more subtle aspects of food preparation and service escaped me... I guess it is different when it is your customary food - no doubt Italians, Japanese etc etc have difficulties with overseas 'Italian' or 'Japanese' restaurants as well. People usually adapt their cuisine to suit the local taste as opposed to 'native' tastes - hence such abominations as chop suey.

There was a large dim sum restaurant in ChCh some years ago, but it has closed, and one of the biggest Chinese restaurants in the central city has gone as well. I guess there just isn't the demand here to sustain quality Chinese cuisine. The only time I ate at the big Chinese restaurant, most of the diners were Chinese tour parties, not locals.

1160021 2011-01-06 20:10:00 When I studied in Duny people incl Asian students quite liked some of the restaurants there but when I went home and went back to Duny for graduation, the food was not that good ... maybe people just got used to the limited stuff.

The aftershocks, heck yeah. Our first night in Chch after visiting my friend and back to the motel at 12am it shook and my eyes rolled up looking at the ceiling and I am from Wellington :waughh:

For dinner, we found Lin's and Red Bowl quite ok, nothing special, the decor presentation is of course not as good as Auckland, no signature dish, no free range etc.. We got the stirfrys and hotplates. Not tried others apart from Foo San for dim sums. We were told that Joyful does a good roast and wonton noodle dishes but not tried. If it is any relation to Joyful in Auckland, Bob likes it too :D

A friend told us Lin's specialises in schiuan (sp) cuisine, isn't that mainland China? They also told us Foo San is a Malaysian chef. Generally speaking in Wellington and I think Auckland; the places with China chefs are not that good (for dim sums) and in Wellington (with the China chef) the pastry is a bit firmer it doesn't have that soft delicate texture. That place in Wellington is a bit cheaper than others and never has as much queues as others, the good ones are pretty much queued out the door to the staircase even if you booked a table (in the weekends).

Althou Chch is supposed to have more Asian population and stores than Wellington.

However; thanks for the effort you put in. I have put in some thoughts of myself. A bit confused too cos Chch people thru the review websites quite like them also but we found the basics were not right, but not sure if they were trying to get rid of old food, like not cooking new food on the morning just before they went for their holiday. They were going on holiday just a day after we went in.

1160022 2011-01-06 20:26:00 Nothing on the website I looked at regarding Lin's suggested they specialise in Sichuan cuisine. However, Gingko says it has Sichuan food:
www.menumania.co.nz There is a link to their menu - check it out for your next trip!
