1159225 2010-12-06 04:11:00 Plenty of steals to be had on TM for the right price, if you are a technician! This Myth (110)
1159226 2010-12-06 04:11:00 Too right! My last three bought on TM over the past 10 years. There are some reliable traders who are still available many months later when you need more memory, more HD, replace fan etc, and because you're an existing customer they treat you well.. coldot (6847)
1159227 2010-12-06 04:47:00 I bought secondhand computers for my kids when they were at Intermediate School. They have both graduated Uni and apart from two power supplies (one each) both comps are still going fine on their original install of W2K, though one won't access the net at present. That one will go to the recycle early next year when my daughter heads to Melbourne to do her Masters, the other will soldier on for a year or so yet then hit the tip.

Cheers

1159228 2010-12-06 04:56:00 I purchased a second-hand PC off TradeMe, my initial plan was to sell it for a small profit, but that never happened. Instead, I put a 750GB hard drive in it and it's now being used as a simple NAS box for backups and storage. pcuser42 (130)
1159229 2010-12-06 05:53:00 I would never buy 2nd hand for myself as I would rather build my own. [edit: ... unless it was JJJJJ selling his hand-me downs :nerd:]

I have bought 2nd hand from both TradeMe and Grays auction computers for my folks. They only needed a basic cheapy PC.

1159230 2010-12-06 05:54:00 I would never buy a second hand PC as my only PC, but as long as I or whoever I am buying for has a spare & the price is right, second hand is great.

I carry around a Compaq V3000 when I do onsite jobs that I cannibalised out of all the dead ones. $800 laptops tend to be mistreated & not worth fixing with new parts so we had a big stack of them.

1159231 2010-12-06 05:58:00 No but I have bought used parts before. pctek (84)
1159232 2010-12-06 06:03:00 I make my own but have bought used parts. Snorkbox (15764)
1159233 2010-12-06 06:09:00 I wouldn't buy anything 2nd hand if I can avoid it. Metla (12)
1159234 2010-12-06 07:53:00 I've literally bought dozens of used (ex lease) comps on TM.
All have been in working order, bar one which is unstable, and is a job reserved for some slack time to see if I can resolve the issue. Many show bad caps, but continue to work.
Another has some USB / bus issues that may or may not have been caused by some other cheap hardware I attached to it.

The only time I buy new is for the gaming rig.
For the 'serious' day to day stuff, a used machine is perfecetly capable... and considering they come with an XP COA, you end up getting a working kit and legit Win XP - all for less than $40... meanwhile the suckers buy new and pay nearer to $1000... and for that they get an OS that is underdeveloped and lacking XP's basic features, and a lack of drivers for all their periperals/toys, and migration woes.

Then again... I'm known for being tight.
