1194820 2011-04-15 18:19:00 An error-message panel pops up randomly on my HP Mini netbook (Windows XP). Headed "Microsoft Visual C++ runtime library", it reads: "program C:\... This application has requested Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team..."

I might do that if the application would identify itself! But, no; it's just C:\... (Name too long for unstretchable panel?)

The panel has an OK button which I click and it goes away - only to come back about 10 minutes later. It's accompanied every time by that "chunk!" chord, which makes it embarrassing to use the machine in public with the sound unmuted :)

If I used the netbook for more prolonged periods it might really get annoying.

Surely someone else has hit this problem. Diagnosis and remedy?

1194821 2011-04-16 02:23:00 I think it may be telling you what the name of the VB program is,
it reads: "program C:\... not where it is (your c: drive). Just a guess :2cents:.

If you just want to stop it running, try this

1194822 2011-04-16 02:26:00 just paste the last 2 or 3 folders/file in the C:\... directory listing
would be good, will give us something to work with :)

1194823 2011-04-16 02:32:00 I've heard reports that in some cases the text in the message box reporting the error can be copied and then pasted into another app - like Notepad - in order to read the full path and application name.

See if you can select the whole line with the mouse... it's a long shot, but worth a crack.

Alternative is to Ctrl Alt Del your way to the Task Manager and shut down apps one by one until the problem stops... then the likely culprit may be the last app to be closed.

Or... see if you can spot an app disappearing from the Task Manager list after you have dispensed with the error message.

Methinks it's probably some malware in the first place.

1194824 2011-04-16 02:46:00 ... or maybe check the logs in Event Viewer. :) fred_fish (15241)
1194825 2011-04-16 02:48:00 yea, you should be able to click into the panel where the C:/... is and then right click select all and then right click again and select copy bevy121 (117)

1194827 2011-04-16 15:21:00 Sometimes you can simply click the message box, press control C, switch to a text editor and press control V. If you are lucky something like this should appear in the text editor

[Window Title]
an example

[Content]
Windows cannot find 'an example'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

[OK]

Note that this trick only works in some popup windows, which is a pain.
