1196918 2011-04-25 05:11:00 The centre swivel hinge - the left side broke off and as I was going to put it into tablet mode, it broke thru the casing .... Seems like a weakness in tablet laptops.

Now looking for a std ultraportable. As the toaster shops stuff are too big and heavy and I cannot touch type on a Netbook, would ultraportables with a i5 CPU be around $1600 ex GST?

I've always had used laptops, this time might get my first new one.

Cheers.

1196919 2011-04-25 23:03:00 Just out of interest, which tablet PC did you have?
I'm thinking of getting a Lenovo/HP tablet PC (x220t or 2760p)

If you want something bulletproof, you could consider HP probook and elitebooks (4320, 4330, 2540p, 2560p) and Lenovo x201/x220.
All are about 12-13", can be configured with i5/i7.

1196920 2011-04-26 00:12:00 I had/have a Thinkpad X61T . I bought it used on TM, 3yr used if that is correct . Lots of scratches on LCD, not sure if that's just the way it is or if that was that former owner . Noisy fan that should of needed replacement - I used use a TP utility developed by enthusiasts to turn it off until it hit a v high temp like 70 .

Looking at a X202 as the X201 is out of stock on the Lenovo site, on special now at 1599 ex GST, formerly near 3000 ex GST . Have asked if CL or Ascent can match it . . . . .

Don't think will get a tablet anymore, I don't personaly use it, bro does . Tablet is also some what larger and heavier (by a bit) than the std X series .

It seems the sub $1500 incl GST laptops are all boat anchors . And I cannot type on Netbooks being a touch typist I cannot go back to two finger pointing . .

1196921 2011-04-26 11:02:00 I'm seriously considering at the Asus U36 at the moment for myself and the reviews look good. The JC model hasn't got a sandy bridge but the SD version due for release next month does.

I have a MSI u100 netbook and find it very easy to type on.

1196924 2011-04-27 00:42:00 Not being bias towards apple but I think that the Macbook Air is your best bet. When you say ultraportable I'm assuming you mean sub 2kg. I haven't seen much better than a core 2 duo and/or a CULV. Most real ultraportables just use atoms and low end amd fusion processors. If you just mean a easy to carry around laptop maybe this: www.trademe.co.nz icow (15313)

That is interesting and given I have a interest in photography, a no . of my peers have at least switched one of their 'puters to a Mac .

I mean sub 1 . 5kg, :D
Hmmm . . . . . .

Hmmm......

Even if you don't like Mac you could just put Windows (or even linux) over the top or bootcamp. My reasons for recommending this is you get a Core 2 Duo @ 1.4,1.6,1.8 or 2.13ghz. A nice screen and solid build quality. The general consensus on "clone macbooks" like the ultraslim MSi X series is that they feel flimsy and have poor plastic build quality.

The downsides are that you get a SSD (which is also a good thing). So you get small storage space and it's expensive to upgrade. You can get a max of 256gb and thats on the most expensive model. No CD drive (tho I doubt you would find a decent ultraportable with one :D) No Ethernet and only one USB port.

I suppose you could fix these problems with things like a USB hub, an external HD and the USB Superdrive apple sells. Depends how inconvenient you find these things. E.g I don't use a CD drive all day so i can carry one round when i need it, and I would game on it so I wouldn't need a big HD. Keeping in mind that it is capable of running crysis (www.pcmag.com). Then again there aren't many powerful netbooks or ultraportables that don't suffer from these same problems (maybe with the exclusion of the small HD issue).

If I was you I'd go to Noel Lemming (or whatever) and try one first.
IMO if i had 1600 to spend on any kind of laptop I'd get a mb Air.

The x220 and 2560p are both under 2kg and can be configured with full voltage i7 processors. Not as thin or light as a macbook air though. The x220 also has an IPS screen, so if image quality is important (eg colour reproduction, viewing angles etc), that helps too.
Lenovo also have keyboards that are most like a desktop keyboard. Battery life is almost 8 hours, or 18hours+ if you add the slice battery.

Macbooks don't use IPS screens so I'm pretty sure they cannot display 16.7m colours. I dont know why they are used by designers so much. Unless they plug it into an external monitor.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm drinking the Lenovo/HP business notebook kool-aid :) Its just I've also been looking to get a powerful ultraportable and have narrowed it down to these two (well the tablet versions of each)
