1196905 2011-04-25 04:49:00 Hi Team

I decided to put my old W2K box back into action as a learning exercise and also as a safe place to let Mrs T loose now that daughter's PC has been written off, and Billy Jnr has bought himself a new one. He refuses to give her the password!

I replaced the flakey 8-9 year old 250W PSU for a near-new good quality 500W unit I stripped out of my daughter's old computer (which is now redundant), powered up and had boot problems until I found I'd swapped over the IDE-1 and IDE-2 cables. I then uninstalled a lot of garbage, ran a Disk Check (no problems found) and defragged etc, downloaded all the updates available for W2K and Firefox and it was running sweet.

Then I fell at the first fence and the custard arrived.....I had originally been going to dump it, so I'd stripped out the near new DVD-RW and forgot where I put it, so I installed a CD-RW on IDE-2 as a slave, which worked fine and I could read off it etc, then I found the DVD-RW right where it should have been so I installed that instead.

It appears OK in device manager, I've assigned it drive letter G (which was working for the CD/RW, and it shows in device manager with the correct model designation etc, but I can't open files from a DVD rom.

The error message is: G:\ is not accessible Incorrect function

Before that it was "G:\ is not accessible this folder was moved or removed", but I think that may have been due to my not remembering to assign G: to the drive. If I take the DVD-RW out and put in the CD-RW instead, that works perfectly, so it seems that all settings are correct.

Web searching reveals that this is not an unknown issue, but I saw nothing that looked like a solution. I've tried it as both master and slave but no joy.....Any ideas?

Cheers

1196906 2011-04-25 05:06:00 Does it have any cd writing programs on it (like Roxio programs / Daemontools)? If it does or did do this (support.microsoft.com) Speedy Gonzales (78)
1196907 2011-04-25 05:58:00 this may fix it

support.microsoft.com

run the auto tool (should be a popup)

actualy - here's a direct link, bit easier :)

Yes, it does have Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator V6.x Speedy, but it shows none of the error messages mentioned by MS, no Code 31 or anything like that. The installed version is also more recent than those quoted, and has been there for years sharing with the DVD-RW with no problems. I don't have Daemon Tools (never heard of them.)

Only the DVD writer is affected, if I swap in the CD writer it works fine. Just had a thought though, while the CD-RW was in there, I did run Ccleaner registry cleaner. I wonder if it could have removed a registry setting for the DVD writer? I did make a back up before cleaning!

As an aside, should I set the CD (or DVD) as Master or Slave? I think it is slaved at present because I wanted my removable hard drives to have priority, but I haven't put them in yet, I was trying to get the DVD situation sorted first.

Further, should the removable HDDs be on IDE-1 as slaves to the Master C: drive or on IDE-2 as slaves? I can only insert one drive cassette at a time (shut down, swap, reboot) so there will only ever be one removable drive attached at any time.

1196909 2011-04-25 06:03:00 I would still see whats under upperfilters / lowerfilters in the registry. Because Roxio is installed. It can still stop a cd or dvd from working. Whether it shows an error, or not.

It doesnt matter what version of windows you're using. Roxio programs or daemontools, (or any cd writing program), can stuff a cd or dvd up (in XP, Vista and Windows 7)

Doesnt really matter if a cd or dvd is on master or slave. Just as long as theyre jumpered properly.

Just dont put hdds on the same IDE connector as a cd or dvd (or vice-versa)

Put it on the same IDE connection as a hdd

1196910 2011-04-25 23:25:00 Re the Master/Slave settings - set the DVD to whatever the CD is set to, since the CD's settings are known to be good.

I'd consider removing the assigned drive letter for the meantime until the issue is sorted out, as this may be a compounding factor.

1196911 2011-04-25 23:26:00 Oh, and another silly thought - does your BIOS need to be reconfigured for the DVD drive? Paul.Cov (425)
1196912 2011-04-26 01:08:00 If it's the only drive connected slave may not work, some drives do some don't.

A single drive should really be set to master. It sounded like perhaps you didn't have a master connected is why I mention this.

It's not generaly reccommended for hard drives and optical drives to share a cable also, although I've never had a problem doing this I read that it can reduce hard drive performance.

There is a master drive on IDE1, that is the W2K OS disk and it is functioning fine so far as I can tell, it boots and behaves normally. There is nothing else on IDE1 at present.

IDE2 works fine with the CD R/W (jumpered as master) and currently has the DVD R/W installed which stubbornly refuses to work. When/if I do get it all going I will attach a removable hard drive cassette to IDE2 as well, and it seems logical that the inserted HDDs will have to be set as slaves.

The removable HDDs raise their own questions. I have two drive carriers and two fixed receptacles they slide into. The fixed receptacles have no jumpers, they are just power supplies and basic interconnection devices, but the cassettes have a a 4-way jumper setup on the rear, similar to but not the same as a hard drive. These jumper designations are SLT1, SLT2, M/S and ACT, and both are currently set to M/S which I guess probably means master/slave, allowing the HDD settings to dictate status.

I assume that the drives in the cassettes will have to be set as slaves if the CD or DVD R/W is set to master, and I have 9 hard drives that I want to pass through this sytem via cassette to archive old data onto DVDs, HDDs or whatever.

It all worked fine in the original configuration of this computer, and I wish I hadn't been so quick at pulling it apart. :( I could take the easy way out and view the drive contents via my USB enclosure, but that would mean I learned nothing, and that's not what I'm after.

Cheers

1196914 2011-05-15 01:29:00 Just got back to this problem again and I'm still searching for a resolution.

Since I last posted, I have taken the following actions:

*-Reset the upper and lower filters via a utility program I found on the web.

*-Uninstalled and reinstalled the drive to ensure it picked up its correct driver, which it did.

*-Checked it with a CDR (Historic! PC World plus! No. 1) and it reads and displays all files OK.

*-Checked it with an audio CD, which it detects and plays, and the on-screen drive icon will open the disk and shows me the CD contents as files. The audio does not play at present, but that is maybe a sound card issue and I don't need to pursue that at present. There is no earphone socket on the DVD-RW so I can't check at that level so I'll drop the CD player back in later to make sure I have my connections right.

*-Searched the web for more answers but without success. Reading other Forums makes you realise just how good PressF1 really is!!

*-Left the latest inorganic rubbish collection notice right where it could see it to give it a hint of what the future might hold if it doesn't buck its ideas up.

The link given by bevy121 does not work and I couldn't find it via the URL so I can't explore that option as yet.

The error message has settled down to one option only: "incorrect function".

So, it seems that only DvDs are affected by whatever it is that is wrong.

Cheers
