1160866 2010-12-12 03:45:00 Looked on internet says jet boat trip from Pipiriki to some landing then walk.
My young boy wants to see it so will go in xmas break. Jet boat trip expensive.
Question is could I launch my outboard boat there and travel up river or are there rapids and rocks?
Thanks

1160867 2010-12-12 03:53:00 You never see outboards used any distance up the river, and while I don't know the location of the bridge my guess is no. Metla (12)
1160868 2010-12-12 05:39:00 The answer to your question is No it is within a National Park, and yes to rocks and rapids and most likely with the low water levels a lot of rocks, thats why they use canoes, Kayaks and Jet Boats.

You can walk or cycle to the bridge instead if your that keen!

1160869 2010-12-12 23:30:00 Yes the jet boat is best option, and a four hour walk from the jetty landing, they noramlly do a day trip, and if you do that take a camera, well worth the journey usually if you have money.

we meant to do it in our jet boat but never did, and now i dont have access to one so:( and i dont have funds so it may be a long time coming before i go.
there is a really great book called bridge to nowhere, all about its history and why there is such a large eleborate bridge in the middle of nowhere now for tourists.

Do yourself and your young boy a favour. Do a Coastguard Daytripper course. Check it out Coastguard (www.cbes.org.nz) It's a basic bare-essential knowledge course, with safety in mind.

Cheers

Hard man, I thought because steamers and paddleboats go up the river an outboard boat might be ok. I have gone from Waiuku to Cambridge in my boat.

1160872 2010-12-13 02:55:00 Just go and look at any other 1930s concrete bridge and imagine bush at each end. It's just another bridge really, built before the road was made to open up country which proved too isolated and difficult for farming. Richard (739)
1160873 2010-12-13 03:04:00 Yep might have to Richard, cant afford a jetboat trip up there for family of 4. prefect (6291)

And the Waikato has also claimed many many lives. You were one of the fortunate. Best of luck anyway.

NI think most rivers have killed some people by death.
Did Seagull racing from Karapiro dam to Hoods Landing this Easter about 40 other boats no problems. The seagull race has been going since 1984 no problems.
