1160757 2010-12-11 22:55:00 Hi all,

I've just got Sky connected and wondered if I could connect the decoder to my TV using a scart -> HDMI cable. The tech has hooked up the TV using scart -> AV (red/yellow/white) cables.

Also, is there any benefit in changing this? I have spare HDMI ports on the TV.

The HDD/DVD recorder only has the one HDMI port which is already occupied, so it will have to stay as AV.

Thanks. :)

1160759 2010-12-11 23:13:00 You need a converter box if such a thing exists rather than just a cable because it would have to convert the analogue signal to digital.

Can those old sky boxes be set up to output in widescreen? I have never seen sky set up correctly, but I don't know the people well enough to offer to try fix it. Everybody I associate with agrees with me that sky is a waste of money.

1160760 2010-12-11 23:21:00 Yes Sky can be set up for widescreen as long as the channel is being broadcast in widescreen. Discovery channel has been transmitted in widescreen since November.
Have you got the basic decoder Jen or the Mysky decoder.

SCART is similar to HDMI in that it contains the audio and video in the same cable.

However as Greven said, SCART uses an analog signal and HDMI is digital, so you would need a converter device of some kind, such as this:

And that is a crap load of money to pay for no real reason!

1160764 2010-12-12 03:49:00 Try hooking it up with S-Video cable and white/red for the audio... this will improve your picture by 100% TV has to have a S-Video in though!

That is how I did mine when I had Sky. The installers are generally a bit thick, or lazy.

You can get a S-Video/red/white SCART out if you like. DSE... www.dse.co.nz

1160765 2010-12-12 04:12:00 I just helped a friend with a new huge TV she brought the other day.
She had a MySky box with the old scart connectors, so I just unpluged the old "scart out", and used a new HDMI cable for "HDMI out" on the back of the MySky box to the "HDMI in" on the LCD TV. Pretty as a picture, so to speak.

1160766 2010-12-12 04:13:00 I believe those Sky boxes also support component out over SCART, which would be better than S-Video. ryanjames.powell (13554)
