1160612 2010-12-11 05:50:00 Hi, is it easy to locate phones that can access a shared network folder and a networked printer?

Thanks.

There are multiple SMB share-compatible applications on the Android Market (such as ES File Explorer) to allow an Android based phone to access shared folders, and though I don't have an iPhone to be sure, I would imagine there are such apps for the iPhone as well. In both cases, there are also apps for printing to networked printers, but I have not had need to try these myself so cannot recommend any.

Most of the printing apps though that I've seen are document viewers / editors with some description of functionality that links them to a desktop application running on another windows machine elsewhere on the network. Or, in the recent iOS4.2 case, it'll allow you to print to something like 4 specific model HP Printers (Not just any printer, just those specific few models).
Because of the way Android works, it's a hell of a lot easier to set it up with Android to print, because you can set specific default applications for document types etc, rather than having to manually fire up an app, and copy your document across to within that applications walled-garden.

Hope that helps clear things up a bit, but I'm not sure I've explained myself terribly well :p

Cheers

1160615 2010-12-11 11:01:00 Maemo (which runs on a handful of nokia devices, most prominently the N900) runs linux, and out-of-the-box it will pick up SMB shares on a network. Printing would probably be a challenge though, I've never seen anything print-related anywhere to do with maemo. ubergeek85 (131)

Kinda my point, although I guess I didn't make it all that clear: since it's Linux (debain-based IIRC) it can fetch you a cold beer if you put enough work into it, the only real question is; how hard is it to set up?

One would hope there's a nice pre-compiled pre-configured copy sitting in a repo somewhere, but that's not always the case :D
