| 1161128 | 2010-12-14 03:22:00 | Hmmm. But is it a case of "lies, damn lies and statistics"? We could easily make lots of assumptions that might be entirely wrong... I think this is the case here. What we aren't told by the Washington Independent (see Snorkbox' link) is that those figures relate to Maricopa County with a population of 5.8m, and the Police Districts of Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe, with a combined population of around 2.4m are located in that County. The County has an urban population of around 60% and a rural population of around 40%. So that's about all we know, it's impossible to deduce meaningful conclusions from the available input. Excepting the Washington Independent may best be suited to wrapping fush and chups in. :devil |

The ACLU is trying to hammer him for 'civil rights violations' and mistreating illegal aliens in violation of the US Constitution, to which the illegals don't have a right anyway, not being citizens and all . This whole page on the Wiki is full of liberal sentiments and is very one-sided . ( . wikipedia . org/wiki/Joe_Arpaio#Tent_City" target="_blank">en . wikipedia . org) In reality, the whole of Arizona heartily endorses his programs and they want him to toughen up on the drug cartel hit men who are hacking Arizona ranchers to death as warning to other US law enforcement people to let them have free run of the US . Texas has had a few ranchers and their whole families slaughtered in their beds at night by these cartel hit men who come up from Mexico and just kill US citizens . This is being poop-shoveled out of the press, but we've had cartel executions in my city from these same persons . You can tell who does it as they leave their M . O in the heads are hacked off and placed on the chest of the deceased, as the multiple bodies are neatly aligned in a row and left in a field or on the side of the road . The black helicopters and unmarked federal cars all show up and it never gets any press . I saw that last bunch of dead guys - four of them, neat as can be all lined up like they were taking a siesta on the side of the road with their heads on their chests . . . . . . It is a full-blown war here in the US with these cartels and their goons . Interestingly, Arizona is a CCW* state, where a legal citizen and property-owning person is allowed to carry a loaded, concealed weapon on them and in their car . It is against US Federal law for even a naturalized# alien cannot own any projectile firing weapon and is restricted to a shotgun with a minimum barrel length of 24 inches . That's all they can legally use or carry - but no hand guns or any weapon with rifling in the barrel . *CCW = Carry Concealed Weapon . # = any alien who has passed their citizenship test for- and accepted- and sworn an oath of allegiance to the US Government . This usually takes about 3-7 years to complete . |

Our police will receive appropriate firearms training, no yahoo is going to shoot someone for pulling a face or making a comment, do you really have so little an opinion of our police force? :2cents: Read this (www.nzherald.co.nz) and decide. Especially the final paragraph which states: Figures in July this year showed that more than 200 police were under investigation for assault and using excessive force. :xmouth: |

It was supposedly a case of mistaken identity. It went as far as the day of court when all charges were dropped but it still cost his parents $700 for the lawyer which they should have been able to claim back. May be they should have brought a civil claim against the officers. Bastards.:groan: |

I admire the USA and its constitutional right to bear arms I would love NZ to have the same but with our stiff licencing. You are lucky to live in a country that has good gun rights. Maybe USA is godzone. I could live with the shotgun restriction can do some serious damage to a human with zero zero (buckshot) |

| 1161133 | 2010-12-14 07:52:00 | There was a show on TV last night - some clips from US cop tapes, but presented by a pommie doing the voice-overs. Anyway, the cops had the WRONG impression there had been a robbery, and that a car had been seen with money spilling from the windows. As is typical of the US it seems, a swarm of cops pulled over a family in their car, ordered out all the occupants at gunpoint, and had them all down on the ground. At that point the family dog (small) jumped out of the car and started running around the group (with tail up high and wagging). A cop started yelping like it was the reptile from Aliens and discharged his shotgun through the dogs head. Turns out there was no robbery, there was no car spilling cash, and they slaughtered a family pet in front of a family that was being put through hell. Do we want that sort of crap happening here? Adrenalin and guns are a bad mix. We need to be tough with the crims to deter crime, not tough with everybody that faces an officer, otherwise we risk a police force that has a gestapo reputation. That means get rid of the wet slap on the hand style of sentences, and make time in prison something to seriously fear with hard, hard work and scant luxuries. |

I agree with you I would also have no respect for a NZ cop with a gun hanging from his hip. It says to me do as I say or I will kill you and I dont like it one little bit. |

| 1161136 | 2010-12-14 21:33:00 | The police should be allowed access to guns if required and in days gone past they always had a 303 back at the police station. Wearing it holstered on the hip like a gun slinger in the wild west is not what I want to see in NZ. Just like I cant walk down town with my SKS over my shoulder nor should the feld polizei. One rule for all. Plus another reason cops here will get banged on the head their pistol removed and get shot with it. |

I used to walk through my village with a shotgun and it wouldn't engender a second glance, now I would be surrounded by the armed offenders. Silly buggers. |
