| 1161100 | 2010-12-13 03:33:00 | Hi Joe RE: They too work in a very hostile environment with Deuces, drug-runners, nether criminals and psycho-cop killers who don't differentiate between an armed or unarmed civil employee pulling them over for a citation . I get the feeling that you think such people don't live and work down here . People who believe that, including a number on this post, need to get a life and read the annual stats . . . . . I would never make such an assumption for where you live as I am not privy to the facts, nor have I lived there . What I see on National Geographic and YouTube shows green verdant hills and cows and sheep frolicking on the hillocks and New Zealanders in funny flat hats with tassels, playing bagpipes and wearing kilts . Wait - that's Scotland . But youse guys aren't far from that idyllic situation I feel . Except for the kilts and that awful, cacophonous Devil's screeching device: bagpipes, youse guys are quite a reality check for me and I cannot but extrapolate that you are the nicest people in the world and have no criminals and everybody eats marshmallow fluff sandwiches and licks candy canes all year long . Reality-wise, I know that as much as I'd like to believe that and as surely as you'd like it to exist too - 'tain't so . Joe, you're forgetting every man and his dog has a gun in the US of A, here in NZ, its only hunters and crims (bad, bad boys) . . . We dont need every officers carrying a gun, we need them to be partnered . . . . I wouldnt mind if they had tazers though! Again, you've been watching too many US movies . I'm not armed and I can think of several people in my immediate neighborhood who aren't so, also . Not for religious scruples, but for the sake that I just don't own any firearms . I LIKE firearms, used to own a few, but as I grew older I gave them up and haven't regretted it nor looked back . It gives one a sense of indestructibility to own a firearm and to me that just doesn't really compute . I also don't want the responsibility of blood guilt . That's a tough one for some people to understand, but really - if you own a gun you'll prolly use it and that can be a big mistake . My choice may not and possibly SHOULD not be your own . |

| 1161102 | 2010-12-13 03:43:00 | @Surfer Joe When I call a cop, I don't want to hear: "Do you want a meter maid, a secretary, a school crossing guard or a real gun-totin' cop?" I want a real cop. With a gun. With LOTS of guns. Lots of BIG guns. " I'd like Police lady from the Castle tv show. She could handcuff me anytime |

Is she anything like one of Charlie's Angels? |

Tazers would have been great with that monkey in Napier !, SJ's new gun would have been a better option. Lurking. |

| 1161106 | 2010-12-13 04:23:00 | For those who voted for the third option, (Stay as it is) you have unknowingly voted for there to be firearms carried in the police car, but only at night, and restricted to cars on crime patrol ( ie non traffic.) In Auckland there are firearms carried in crime patrol cars at night, and also frequently by detectives - Only it is not advertised. Armed police on the street - excellent idea, In Brisbane, there is a visible presence by the Police footpatrols on the streets in the CBD and entertainment areas, and there is very little in the way of yobo problems with unruly youths taking on the Police at night. Fortitude Valley the CBD and the Eagle Pier precinct are far safer than downtown Auckland at night. |

I can remember foot patrols in Masterton years ago and I think it would be a good idea to bring them back. The cops were respected back then because you could get to know them but you can't when they just drive around in cars. |
