1160777 2010-12-12 09:49:00 I recommend that you ring sky and ask (demand nicely) for a Scart to component lead this is what you need, this will offer your TV the best picture from your sky box. If your sky box doesn't have a component output setting, again tell them you want one. Not all boxes have component out. Thanks for the helpful link explaining the connectors. The Motorola Sky box does have a component output setting, so I will give Sky a call as you suggest.

And you haven't yet put an ethernet cable in the LAN socket ??It also has wireless LAN ... well would if I bought the dongle. :p

The first one is video only, the second one is sound and video.

(buy this one) (www.freeviewshop.co.nz)Thanks for clarifying that. If Sky doesn't send me one, I will get one of those.

Thanks all. :)

1160778 2010-12-12 11:11:00 Looks like I missed the boat here, but I'll throw in my few cents' worth. Personally I wouldn't bother with getting a sky tech out, but do ring them and ask if your model of box supports component output. A while back they did a big firmware update for a lot of models, enabled component out on quite a few, however some models couldn't support the upgrade due to hardware limits, might've been the video processing chip lacked the grunt IIRC.

In all honesty if a store asks for more than $10-15 for a scart cable, don't pay it. Scrounge up a few RCA connectors, look up a pinout, and you only have to solder 6 wires onto terminals. Makes me laugh whenever I see $50 scart cables, that's the advantage of scart - it has a pin for every signal, just a matter of which wires are connected where.

I'm rambling, hijacking.... oops.

The installers are generally a bit thick, or lazy.

Not quite; it's just that Sky went for the cheapest option (big surprise!) and every installer will have a whole box of these cables sitting somewhere, literally. My father was an installer for a few years, every so often we'd clean out the garage and come across 20-30 (easily) of the damn things, still in plastic wrap & with tie around it, ended up straight in the bin.

Not that sky never got any other scart cable types made, but they're a rarity. Roughly, they're outnumbered 100-1.

Edit: yet another new avatar I see! It would seem that the floodgates have opened! ;)

1160779 2010-12-12 19:44:00 Instead of all this mucking around, why not just get the Mysky decoder for an extra $15 a month.
:)

1160780 2010-12-12 21:12:00 I had the same problem when I bought a new telly. In the end I got it connected scart to component as there was no scart to hdmi. The picture was rubbish. I got sky to change the decoder to one with hdmi out. It's a little silver thing, dunno what make. The picture is good, probably not as good as the hi def my sky, but who cares, it's only the telly. You can still scan all the channels for something worth watching & end up switching it off Phil B (648)

:)Don't think I need the extra features this offers (apart from the HDMI issue), as I can record Sky if I wish to.

Anyway, I phoned Sky and they are going to send me a Scart -> component cable and I will return my composite cable to them. If I get another composite cable sent instead (would not be surprised ...), then I will ask about a HDMI compliant Sky box.

I asked for HD but I didn't want mysky. It's much better than standard but not 1080 hd. I moved up from 32 inch crt & the picture went downhill. They charged $25 I think to come & install it

1160783 2010-12-14 10:06:00 Thats a pace box, didn't think they had HDMI out, in fact i was sure the didn't unless there are two types. Got a pic of the back. Alex B (15479)
1160784 2010-12-14 10:12:00 Take my word for it it has. I'm not taking it out just for a pic Phil B (648)
1160785 2010-12-14 10:21:00 Your word is not worth anything to me sorry ;)
