1161289 2010-12-13 20:23:00 A Super city is bound to cost more initially

You have t merge 3 or 4 systems, offices, staff, etc etc

And if they are reducing staff by paying redundancy this costs money too.

I think they should reduce staff by natural attrition, that costs nothing.

The politicians should not have promised low rates as they cannot deliver on that.

But they could avodi putting up their pay

In the long term it hsoudl eb good for Auckland,
better transport
better facilties,
standard building codes etc
less duplication etc etc.

Less bickering between council and the region authority.

More council spending = rate rises
++ they now have the massive amount of debts from various AK councils to deal with.
How many here get annual 4% wage increases....
So why are we expected to be able to pay rapidly increasing rates.

-lets not cut spending, instead just borrow millions. That way everyones happy = untill payback time- which may be now.. aka NTH Shore

The one good thing about separate Ak councils was they sort of kept each other honest. Many time Ak City Council wanted to spend up large on a mega-project & wanted the other councils to chip in: which never happened.
Now if AK council wants to WASTE money on a mega-project, then there is really nothing to stop them.
Just wait till the rail link to the airport gets underway. Watch your rates after that one starts

1161292 2010-12-13 21:36:00 Commie mayor I hope he has another heart attack and its fatal. I know thats harsh but thats how I feel about labor party people in power they arent fit and proper people to run local government let alone central government.
I didnt vote for him he was voted in by south auckland and most of those voters would be renters ha ha its going to bite them in the ass with increased rent.
Rates should drop heaps without having to pay for duplicity in men and equipment.

Visitors to NZ must laugh when they hear Aucklanders refer to Auckland as a SUPER CITY, a medium size city of only 1.3 million, very embarrassing for NZ

But anyway I agree with your post a large united Council is always going to cost a lot to set up initially that will impact on the books for some time. In theory it will cost a lot less in the medium and long term and give NZ's largest city direction after decades of bumbling around.

The old short term pain for long term gain.
