1160767 2010-12-12 04:54:00 I believe those Sky boxes also support component out over SCART, which would be better than S-Video.

Yes, they do.

1160768 2010-12-12 05:43:00 Thanks for all the helpful replies. :)

It is a basic Motorola Sky box. I don't have S-Video on the TV. See attached image for plug options.

So ... I should hook it up to my TV using component RGB for a better quality picture? I see there is a RGB component example here (www.freeviewshop.co.nz), but there is also a RGB+audio example here (www.freeviewshop.co.nz) cable. Which is better?

Oh, I should add the Sky box has the following Scart options: composite, S-video, RGB and component. What is the difference between RGB and component?

Cheers.

1160769 2010-12-12 06:17:00 Hello Jen

Component and RGB are not the same thing see here www.michaeldvd.com.au - Great link

RGB is split Red Green and Blue (found mostly on a VGA 15 pin 3 row d shell)
Component splits Red and Blue and combines luminance black and white in the green connector

HDMI is a digital signal and component is analog so you would need a converter and it would be pointless.

I recommend that you ring sky and ask (demand nicely) for a Scart to component lead this is what you need, this will offer your TV the best picture from your sky box. If your sky box doesn't have a component output setting, again tell them you want one. Not all boxes have component out.

However at times I have found S-Video through a SKY box to be just as good as component, but you don't have a S-Video Connector on your TV, Go component.

Component is classed as a HD connection, it offers the widest bandwidth for an analog signal

If sky won't give you one buy one from a local TV store :)

The first one is video only, the second one is sound and video.

(buy this one) (www.freeviewshop.co.nz)

1160772 2010-12-12 07:39:00 My decoder is a Zenith and has 2 scart sockets, one marked TV and the other VCR. Yes before you buy the cables ring up Sky to find out if your decoder supports RGB. It may not as it might not be wired up inside the decoder to support it.

It's not RGB you want. Jens tv has a component input, not RGB.

That is correct! Everyone seems to think RGB and component are the same signal when they are not.

1160775 2010-12-12 08:32:00 The decoder has no component out. Mine doesn't. Yes I meant component. My TV has component in too.

It does with a scart adapter. I've used it before.
