But as said you can't rely on stats or draw useful conclusions from same.

1161160 2010-12-16 04:22:00 Not this old deterrent chestnut again - where is your evidence that getting tough on crims deters crime? It would certainly appear it has the opposite effect, it leads to more serious crime.
Ten years of "sensible sentencing" in New Zealand should have taught you this deterrent theory is hokum.

As I said in the UK, when they had automatic hard labour for using a weapon or even being involved with a crime that involved weapons - the crims did NOT use weapons.

And we have not had 10 years of sensible sentences.
We have had 10 years of that guy begging for them.

But we have had very few truly tough sentences, and the jails are too soft to deter people. Make them hard so none wants to go there. And what if you could not come out unless you had a trade, and a job lined up, and could write and speak proper English, and could cook and ball room dance. And what if they were all segregated so that could not teach each other. And what if they had Mary Poppins and Bambi movies on closed circuit tv ?

And what if there was a 30 years sentence for dealing or making P ?
Not many people would take that risk, especially if you put a few away quickly and showed them on tv in their jail.

Oh how safe we are....

I look forward to you moving to Yemen, it looks pretty safe according to your argument.

So the death sentence would stop murders according to your logic, so explain away the high US murder rate if you can.

Explain how any offender can kill again after the death sentence has been carried out or do you believe in really quick reincarnation?

They leave poison in your soup - so be careful out there.

Looks like you have lost the debate once again.

Keep throwing the red herrings though. They make good bait. :)

1161166 2010-12-16 06:18:00 Arming Police though wouldn't have helped the cop who this started over, in fact quite likely would have finished him off if a gun had been on his person. So as usual with these types of things, the people who want Police armed are just using a case to further their cause, even if in this case there is no logic behind it whatsoever.

I'd like to put the reverse of this argument.
OK none of us know the actual situation.

But here's my take on it.

If I was the cop walking back to my car, for a start I would not take my eyes off two young men (an old lady yes)
Then if one of them came up behind me and hit me with the machete, I would grab my gun and turn around. Tell him to back off or else. Then I doubt if he would have hit me again. I think I would have had a good chance of living.

I would much rather have taken that chance than to roll over on the ground and let them hit me with a machete and probably kick me in the head while in a fetal position where I had a good chance of dying.

Are you thick? It was such a stupid question that it wasn't worth answering.
