1196470 2011-04-22 10:06:00 Have a netbook running Win 7 which connects by wireless to the internet. Am going away next week to a country cottage and need to connect to the internet by RJ 45 socket. ThoughtIi'd better try it at home first - get the error message: Connecting through WAN miniport (PPPOE)
Error 651: The modem (or other connecting device) has reported an error.

Googling Error 651 produces a number of confusing suggestions. Has anyone had any experience with fixing this please?

1196471 2011-04-22 10:29:00 Are you trying to use VPN? Looks like a stuffed aerial can cause that error Speedy Gonzales (78)
1196472 2011-04-22 10:34:00 What's VPN? Don't understand about "stuffed aerial" - can connect by wireless - only get error message when I try to connect to router by cable. Shortstop (632)
1196473 2011-04-22 10:50:00 This doesnt have a dialup modem in it does it?? See if there's a modem entry in connections in IE change to to never dial a connection. Or your modem / router is configured wrong somewhere.. It looks like virtual PC (if yo use it) can cause this error too. Or it could be, because youre using a USB modem Speedy Gonzales (78)
1196474 2011-04-22 10:56:00 Have a read of This article (ghost301tech.wordpress.com) - several things to try

Edited: also just read "Also, if you have Adobe (or Apple) software installed, disable the Bonjour service"

1196475 2011-04-24 10:05:00 Thanks Wainui - I had actually already googled that. Quite frankly, just left me more confused. Has anyone on Press 1 had and fixed this error? It's very frustrating. Shortstop (632)
1196476 2011-04-24 12:03:00 Out of interest - has the wireless connection been disabled/ disconnected when trying the RJ45.

I have seen on rare occasions where one wont connect if the other is still active :2cents:

1196478 2011-04-24 22:45:00 What's VPN?
Virtual Private Network which is usually used to access a work network from outside eg from home.

1196479 2011-04-25 10:38:00 Thanks for replies. Wainui, I just select wired network from the two options - how would you disable the wireless connection? Shortstop (632)
