1197317 2011-04-26 22:29:00 HP Pavilion dv7 - Windows 7
2 hard drives
when booting the computer get a SMART warning:

"The SMART hard disk check has detected an imminent failure.

To ensure no data loss, please backup the content immediately and run the Hard Disk Test in System Diagnostics."
I run the HP diagnostics - no problems detected on either hard drive.
I boot the computer.
Another error comes up from windows:

Windows detected a hard disk problem....
Which disk is failing?
The following hard disks are reporting failure:
Disk Name: Toshiba MK6465GSX
Volume: C:\;E:\
I have run a chkdsk on both drives but the error continues.
I tried running a Toshiba disk diagnostics - it failed to recognize either drive

1] is this a valid error?
2] if it is not a valid error should I ignore the warnings or turn them off & if so how?

Thank you

1197318 2011-04-26 23:20:00 Have you tried speedfan which has smart monitoring as well, or the HDD manufactures tests? gary67 (56)
1197319 2011-04-26 23:25:00 C: and E: are possibly the same physical drive, smart errors are for the physical hard drive and not partitions. If it's a real error it's quite serious. Try Gary67's suggestions and see how you go from there. dugimodo (138)
1197320 2011-04-26 23:29:00 I did run SpeedFan
It indicates one of the drives has an error in "Reallocation Sector Count"

But I don't know which drive.

When I installed the Fujitsu/Toshiba drive diagnostic tool it recognized both drives but wouldn't allow me to select either for diagnostics?

1197321 2011-04-26 23:46:00 Is it still under warranty? Alex B (15479)
1197322 2011-04-26 23:46:00 It's one physical drive with two partitions I would think also. The D: drive will be optical. Snorkbox (15764)
1197323 2011-04-26 23:48:00 It is absolutely two drives - I took the underneath cover off & there are two drives.\

under warranty: I don't know

Yes. back it up now, and then RMA the drive if it's still under warranty. If it isn't buy another drive.

Diagnostic tools aren't perfect. I had the new Seagate diagnostic pass one a while back and it was making obvious errors. Even Seagate themselves said it's not perfect, same with Toshiba I'd say.

Take a look in Event Viewer - System. probably a bunch of dish errors..........

Chkdsk only looks at/fixes software errors, not failing drives.

1197325 2011-04-27 00:40:00 Yeah I don't use Seatools anymore, I find looking at the Raw data with SpeedFan or HDAT2 to be much more reliable.

SMART only predicts about 50% of failures but when it does predict a failure it's not going to be wrong.

To find out which drive is which, you could remove all but one drive, and power the system on. If you still get the error then it's that drive. If you don't get the error it's one of the drives you removed.

1197326 2011-04-27 01:33:00 Agent - re: pulling one of the drive - common sense prevails!!
Thank you to everyone who contributed.
I will research the warranty & replace it.
