1196976 2011-04-25 08:49:00 I have a Acer Aspire 5102 laptop that every now and then brings up a Blue Screen and reboots itself. When its starts up again I find that I have no modem. This has only happened (very intermittantly) when I am on the Net (dial up).

After using Blue Screen View it shows a DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL with portcls.sys in the dump file.

A quick look on the net for this fault indicates the sound divers could be the cause of the fault. This does not explain why I lose my modem and there is no sound problems that I can see.

So far I have managed to reinstall the modem drivers and get things going again.

I suspect the modem is slowly dying as it takes a while for the laptop to see the modem again.

Am I looking in the right direction?

1196981 2011-04-26 03:21:00 The sound drivers are not the latest. But will update them anyway.

Would like to know how it is upsetting the modem.

1196982 2011-04-26 03:43:00 Your modem also uses sound, as in analogue signal down the phone line...The fact that the laptop only BSOD with modem being used points the issue IMO to the drivers of the modem! SolMiester (139)
