1162816 2010-12-17 07:26:00 Hey all. I've been assessing my computing situation, and I think that the time to move to Linux has come. 95% of what I do on my computer is either in Firefox or VLC. As for the other five percent, well, I'll keep vista, but it's really only for a couple of ham radio programs that use retarded data formats. Vista is already on a separate partition as it is.

Anyway, my question is; how do I go about deciding which distro to go with? I was thinking Debain or Ubuntu, but that's only because I hear that Ubuntu is a good transitional distro for us winblows users, and Debain because Maemo is based off of it, and I use Maemo quite a bit on my Tablet.

So far I'm still in the 'reading-up' stage, but I know the difference between cd and dd, although I don't quite know how to work dd, I just know to stay away from it for now. Same with vi and emacs. I know how to use the man command thank god.

I thought I should consult the local sages before taking the plunge.

My setup will (hopefully) look something like this: x86_64 (to get full use out of my Turion 64bit CPU), with windows on the first partition, and the second partition with Linux.

Can anyone offer any pointers? And yes, before you ask, I have done a ton of googling already, and I know I'll be doing a ton more, most likely with stupid questions like 'how do I mount my GPU into /bin' ;) ok maybe not that stupid.

1162817 2010-12-17 07:44:00 Ubuntu is the way to go... Ubuntu should be more user friendly than Debian and everything will work out of the box mp3 et al (correct me if I am wrong)... Ubuntu and Debian (and Mint and countless others that use .deb) have the largest repositories. RPMs (fedora opensuse) are a bit backwards these days.
Kubuntu is not up to the same standard as ubuntu either... (as of 10.04, I can't say for 10.10, but i assume it's the same)

I have heard many good things about Linux Mint, if you want to go that way.

Try openSuse if you like it pretty KDE that's the way to go. If you like it um... dull and old looking, GNOME and Ubuntu.
If you can't find something in the repositories you'll easily find the source to compile. It's not a big deal.

Try a few and see what you like, it's not so much about the distro itself it's more about KDE vs GNOME and RPM vs DEB.

Or you could get Arch :D

1162819 2010-12-17 08:14:00 I have installed Ubuntu in a directory on my C: drive where Windows 7 64-bit is installed using Wubi. It dual boots with Windows 7 being the default Operating System. It can be easily uninstalled if need be through control panel. I installed the 64-bit version. I have encountered the problem where I have no sound and I sometimes cannot access data on disks that are not mounted by Ubuntu. Otherwise it runs very well.

The other option is to use Grub and install it on a separate partition.

I have a lot to learn.

Try watching some of these videos on Utube.

1162820 2010-12-17 08:19:00 Thanks for all your input guys, I've decided to go with Ubuntu 10.10. I'd prefer to do a proper install to a separate partition rather than use wubi, I tried that a couple of years ago and found that it was quite neutered.

I'll report back with how badly I've screwed it up soon.

1162821 2010-12-17 08:24:00 I recently installed Kubuntu 10.10 which is Ubuntu with KDE. Installed on a separate PC. Picked up all hardware with no issues. Snorkbox (15764)
1162822 2010-12-17 08:30:00 Good move for linux, I would but i'm over reliant on windows! btw, didn't know you did radio. I wounder how many more of us are hiding around The Error Guy (14052)
1162823 2010-12-17 08:44:00 Only just got into it now (radio), as I just got a wouxun handheld recently, but I've been into it for a while.

Now I'm waiting for the mobile version to come out, the handheld has 4w Tx on UHF (IIRC) and 5w on VHF. The mobile version has a whopping 40w on UHF and 50w on VHF, plus it will Rx from 3-30MHz and another band that I can;t quite remember.... wow, got OT fast lol.

Download isn't exactly speeding along, but I can't complain. Free is free.

1162824 2010-12-17 08:59:00 Why not stick with Windows?

It does what you want it to do.
