1162772 2010-12-17 04:33:00 I'm convinced that the new prices (after GST increase) I'm paying in the supermarket are definitely more than they should be. For instance, my favourite crisps ("chips" to some of you) are Copper Kettle and now they hover around the $3 mark, whereas before, when they were on "special" they'd be less than $2.50.

The other day we came across a packet of very plump chicken drumsticks in the freezer which we bought in 2004 (the drumsticks not the freezer). Standard cost then in our New World - $2.99 a kilo. Today in NW the same sort of thing was $7.99 a kilo - seems a bit of a jump to me (you can see I don't get out much).

And, yes, we did eat the legs without any ill effects.

1162774 2010-12-17 04:46:00 Yeah, no doubt many items are marked considerably over the 2.5% needed to cover the GST rise, the supermarkets and manufacturers probably just hope people won't really notice.

And just one advice to those who shop at Countdown/Foodtown/Woolworths; use your onecard, especially for bigger shopping and the cleaning/personal hygiene stuff. Because if you don't we RIP YOU OFF! Don't have one? Either get one or every time you shop, ask the checkout to use the store number/card.

Ahh! One Card! Riiiight! Rip off - surely not??

We've got a local Countdown (used to be Woolworths) and a Onecard each that are linked. We wondered why we weren't getting any vouchers so I had a fossick around on their website and came across the following:

Onecard Rewards - earning points
You must spend a minimum of $10.00 in a single transaction to qualify for Rewards points. You will then receive 1 Rewards point for every whole $10 spent in that transaction. This earning rate can be altered at the discretion of Progressive. Rewards points may also be earned through Bonus point promotions. See specific promotions for Terms and Conditions.

Onecard Rewards - receiving Rewards
# The current redemption rate is $15 for every 200 points at the Rewards cut-off date (being the first Sunday of every February, May, August and November). Progressive reserves the right to alter the redemption rate or Rewards cut-off dates at any time.
# Any points remaining after conversion into Rewards cash vouchers will be carried forward to the next Rewards date. Rewards points expire after 6 months if they are not converted into a Rewards cash voucher. Expired Points are removed from your account four times a year immediately after each Rewards mailing.

Now that seems to mean that you need to to spend a minimum of $2,000 in a three month period to receive a $15 voucher, but if you only spend $1,999.99 you don't qualify for a voucher, so there are no points remaining after conversion into Rewards cash vouchers to be carried forward to the next voucher and will therefore evaporate. Bearing in mind Countdown is generally more expensive and therefore we don't go there that often, and that there's only two of us, it's impossible for us to rack up the required number of points in a quarter. (I am willing to be corrected ;))

The only advantage we get is when they have Onecard windbacks or Onecard specials.

1162776 2010-12-17 05:25:00 It also depends where you shop!

I find it ironic New World and Pak n Save the same comapny yet prices vary between then in fact prices vary between towns!

Example we went shopping in Taupo P n S wife picked up some :banana I put them back at $3.99 per kilo That seemed a bit steep. My Parents went to Wanganui and P n S was $1.99 per kilo. Someone want to explain $2 differance between stores?

Unless the price is locked down in a National Mailer they can charge what they like.

1162777 2010-12-17 05:28:00 Even before the GST rise a lot of supermarket products prices increased, because of the effect of the ETS. I did wonder if they had applied it to goods already on the shelf prior to the ETS date.
See here www.nzherald.co.nz
Then along came the GST increase and pushed prices up even further, some seemed way beyond what the increase of GST would have created.

1162780 2010-12-17 07:42:00 While we have noticed some individual price rises our total weekly grocery shop still costs pretty much the same as prior to the GST rise. Probably a seasonal thing, fruit and vegies are noticeably cheaper. tutaenui (1724)

Ah the have your shopping habits recorded card .

You know I have shopped with people who have one and the savings amounts to much the same as the petrol discounts .

6c off! Wow . About $2-$3 .

SHopping discount similar .

I can get more by going to Pak N Save instead .

Also supermarkets are not the cheapest for everything .
Meat, fruit and veges for instance .
Even things like flour and loo paper .
