1162856 2010-12-19 02:11:00 Open up a terminal and run the "dmesg" command, that should list the boot messages and the errors you speak of. Agent_24 (57)
1162857 2010-12-19 05:12:00 dmesg brought up a lot of log data, but didn't mention anything on modprobe. The error message was something like modprobe: FATAL error /path/to/file/that/I/can't/remember not found, no such file or directory. ubergeek85 (131)
1162858 2010-12-19 07:30:00 From the terminal, do:
dmesg | grep modprobe

Then highlight the lot with your mouse
Now, post back in your browser by middle-mouse-clicking. It's kind of a secondary copy / paste.

1162859 2010-12-19 07:39:00 Tried that, returned bupkis. Managed to snag a photo of the error though; www.imagef1.net.nz

Exact text is:

modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.35-23-generic/modules.dep: No such file or directory

Then it's repeated.

1162860 2010-12-19 07:48:00 Never mind, it's a known bug; bugs.launchpad.net

Looks like some newer dev releases fix it, I'll wait for the stable release.

I understand the first half of that, but I'm absolutely clueless when it comes to the other bit: "Then use Synaptic to reinstall initramfs-tools"

Can you elaborate on it?

1162863 2010-12-20 10:53:00 Synaptic Package Manager

Search for the package "initramfs-tools" and tell it to reinstall it.

1162865 2010-12-20 10:57:00 Or simply open a terminal and type

$ sudo aptitude reinstall initramfs-tools
:)
