| 1163272 | 2010-12-19 20:36:00 | OK Japan is the same size as NZ and has very few natural resources but they have 100 million people, and I think their standard of living is probably much higher than ours. (may be not quality of life, pollution huge cities etc) But I am only advocating say 12 million people not 100 million. |

Japan had a couple thousand years head start on us and tried to take over the pacific with force, that failed but they rose up thanks to the country that defeated them to become a major industrial nation. You did not answer the question of where our millions of extra people is going to come from? |

| 1163277 | 2010-12-19 21:20:00 | Ahh but if you lowered the immigration standards then you would be getting the wrong sort of people and you would be complaining more. Not exactly a flood of Brits (I included Scotland, Wales Cicero) and South Africans flooding into NZ. When they do you complain about them as well. Heres a fantastic idea which you may like! Ban contraception and **** like rabbits  |

The way that Kiwis live (and other Westerners in general) is very, very wasteful and extravagant. Not only that, the Japanese have a history of effective top down management system that conserves their natural resources (i.e., timber, which their past leadership is famous for). There is no way even with NZ's fertile land and booming fisheries (which will quickly collapse but for our current management) that we can sustain the same number of people here as in Japan if we continue our lives the way it is. |

| 1163281 | 2010-12-19 22:45:00 | In a nutshell it is not how many people we have living in this country but how we are part of the global market. We create the problems we have by comparing ourselves to other countries and not looking after ourselves and our jobs. Unfortuanately we are getting caught up in other countrys over population problems. New Zealand probably has the best chance of survival in a global catastrophy like the so called Pandemics that have been used to strike fear into the worlds hearts in recent years. Simply because of its low volume population! More people equals more problems and risk! |
