1197949 2011-04-30 01:03:00 Flash drive probably won't work for XP - you need a floppy.

XP will require SATA\AHCI drivers if you are installing to a drive that's on a controller with it enabled.

You can usually disable it, but you lose features\performance. It's worth the trouble to get it going.

If you really can't get a floppy drive then I think slipstreaming will be a better idea.

1197950 2011-04-30 07:55:00 Ok, so I started building this and found that I am few spacers short. The current motherboard is a microATX and only has 6, whereas the new one needs 9 as its a full sized one. So it's off to dick smith tomorrow morning to get them (hopefully they stock the right ones).

The other little snag is the manual with the cpu and motherboard differed slightly with the instructions to connect the cpu to the motherboard. The motherboard instructions states to use thermal interface material (if necessary) the cpu does not say to use it.

I assume the cpu manual should be more accurate and therefore I don't need this - is this correct?

Cheers

1197951 2011-04-30 07:56:00 BTW: thanks for the advise re slip streaming, I've goggled instructions on this and it looks quite straightforward. hsvman12 (12360)
1197952 2011-04-30 07:59:00 If your CPU is brand new retail boxed then the heatsink will come with thermal interface material (TIM) on it.

If you buy an aftermarket heatsink you may need to get your own TIM (although some do come with it already on)

If you are re-using an old heatsink you will need to remove the old TIM and and then put some new stuff on.

1197953 2011-05-01 08:10:00 Hi,

Ok, so it's all in and doesn't boot properly - it keeps crashing during windows start up (even if using safe mode), so I've decided to do a clean install. I've tried the slipstream using nlite, included the sata drivers. When I put the cd into the cd drive it doesn't come up with the option to boot from it. If I put the original windows xp cd in the same drive it does. Does anyone know what I have done wrong? I'm burning an iso file to a cd - is this correct?

Cheers

1197954 2011-05-01 08:34:00 Are you using XP to slipstream. Its not a good idea, using another version of windows (besides XP), if youre slipstreaming XP. It can cause probs.

Did you copy the contents of the cd to the hdd?

Then you install Nlite, and tick what you want to add / change / inc making the ISO the option at the bottom. Add a service pack, if you have 1. Then once you've done whatever it creates the ISO. Then you burn it to cd (dont copy the ISO itself to the cd, it wont work). You need a program that can burn ISO's to cd

1197955 2011-05-01 11:56:00 You also need to enable the option to make the CD bootable in nLite, IIRC. Agent_24 (57)
1197956 2011-05-01 12:11:00 Just as long as you select the ISO option at the beginning, it should make it bootable once Nlite creates it. Just make sure, you dont change any of the settings, when you get to the screen when you create the ISO. If you want, I can show you how to create an ISO / remove options you dont need, using teamviewer.

All you need is 3 files. Nlite, RyanVM and a file called Onepiece's EN-US Windows XP Post-SP3 All-in-One Update Pack. And a few small files. This pack has everything in it (WMP, IE8 and its updates, all the .Net framework files, DX, and every update till April 2011). Then, all you have to do is slipstream the SATA drivers, and whatever drivers you want. Create the ISO, burn it, then its up to date

1197957 2011-05-05 10:13:00 Hi guys, sorry I've not responded sooner, but have been in Welly for work this week.

Anyway, with having troubles building the slipsteam on Sunday, I thought I'd have a better noisey around the bios to see if there was anytihing I could change to help. I changed the harddrive settings (I think to IDE, but can't remember now) and it booted into windows no problems. I then spent the rest of the night updating all the drivers and my PC is back to it's glory - with no install of windows required. Excellent.

The only issue I have at the moment is when I shut the PC down, it keeps rebootiing (like you click "restart") instead of shutdown.

Being away, I haven't had a chance to look at this, but will do this next. Any ideas to help me?

Cheers

Andrew
