| 1162578 | 2010-12-16 09:47:00 | My understanding is that they can be partially rooted, but that the kernel can't yet be replaced, and there are a few interesting conditions . Note that I don't have one, and I don't know anyone who has a rooted one (although my workmate has a stock one), so I may be wrong here . In your shoes, I'd get a Nexus One (there are a few other members here who also have them), or wait 'til the Nexus S comes out . No, they can definitely be rooted, either by patching, or by replacing the kernel altogether . . . . . but it's not for the faint-of-heart, and the expertise required means I'm loathe to recommend a Galaxy S to anyone else, which is a crying shame, because the hardware is so damn good . There are so really good custom roms/kernels on XDA that address the issues that stock Galaxy S's have, but so often you end up with annoying little issues that detract from the overall experience . It's not a nice feeling turning your $800 device into a paperweight . . . (It does feel good when you manage to unbrick it though!) :D |

| 1162579 | 2010-12-16 09:47:00 | what network do you have yours on??Mine's on 2degrees at the mo - I started on Vodafone, but switched as soon as 2degrees came out with decent data plans. ...they can run on all 3 cant they? Not quite - there are two versions of the phone, depending on which 3g frequencies you're using. One version is for T-Mobile / Vodafone / 2degrees etc, and supports 900/1700/2100MHz WCDMA. The other is for AT&T / Telecom XT, and supports 850/1900/2100MHz WCDMA. The 900MHz version is more commonly available in NZ, because Vodafone sells them here. |

That's what I've gathered from reading many articles on sites such as gizmodo :D |

Landed in NZ for around NZ$900. I love it, and it's the envy of all my mates - many of whom have iPhones (on contract - suckers!). The only thing I am disappointed with is the pitiful 500MB of internal memory. Some apps will run off the SD card, but the majority don't. I currently have about 20MB of free space - if I go below that I start getting notifications that I am low on space (!!), so I have to choose an app I don't use too often to sacrifice and uninstall. |
