1162977 2010-12-18 03:24:00 Hi all

Those of you that are power users had better sit down before reading this as it might come as a bit of a shock - nay, an impossibility no less!!

For various reasons I try to limit my Internet usage to 1 gig a month.

Dec 2nd is SWMBO's birthday and it's b*^%#y inconvenient it being so near Christmas. On top of that it was one of those BIG birthdays, so in the quest to find the perfect present for the lady that already has everything (after all - she's got me - what more could she want?), I've gone into not only my second, but my third gig of data for my monthly period, which runs out tomorrow.

As indicated, I've got 300megs left and I don't want it to evaporate like the Onecard points (forums.pcworld.co.nz) so what free, not necessarily necessary, but definately kinda engaging or useful, bit(s) of software could I grab?

Eg - on a totally microcosmic scale do I need Adblocker plus because it would save me a bit of bandwidth over a period of time?

Thoughts please - I'll answer any questions :thanks

1162978 2010-12-18 03:32:00 Adblock+ probably won't save you a huge amount of data (although it will save some) but it will certainly save your sanity.

Noscript is also useful too.

As for your last 300MB, there are some pretty nice free games around, or you could try Puppy Linux for fun if you haven't already.

You might also enjoy downloading some free music from www.Jamendo.com

1162979 2010-12-18 04:01:00 Hi Agent, thanks for your reply. I should have said I'm not interested in games.

Linus is a possibility - I've never looked at it, although I'm likely to run foul of SWMBO if I get too engrossed, which I'm wont to do.

1162980 2010-12-18 04:06:00 If you keep downloading after you hit your limit the ISP may not throttle you :devil pcuser42 (130)
1162981 2010-12-18 04:43:00 you may want to turn the router off seriously so there's no temptation if you are on the PC.

turn if on for 15mins to read news and email and to the same before you go to sleep.

just doing general things 100MB a day is nothing. i switched from 10GB to 3GB for this month b/c sometimes we only use 6-7GB and because we will be away from home for 10 days this billing cycle over Christmas ... but we have already chewed up 1.5GB. Our billing cycle ends the mid of each month,

Oh well, give Jamendo a try then, you're sure to find something you like there :D

I don't get throttled, except by the wife now and then. I'm on Telstra's bog standard basic PDQ plan. If you go over the limit nothing happens to the speed, which, because it's the basic plan, is a craaaawl anyway.

I had to download a 240meg app the other day - it took aaaages! :waughh:

Hi Chill
What's chrome got over Firefox and how much of a hassle is it to swap?
