I think it might have been you, but it could have been another member on here...

No. My son got put in hospital this year overnight by an assault but he neither started it nor retaliated. He got a gash on his forehead and when asked by the Police if he wanted to know what happened to the guy he said no because he had moved on and it wasn't a big thing. He also had the opportunity to have victim support but didn't need it.

A few weeks later he went within inches of being killed when an elderly driver ran a red light (I talked to the driver later and he just didn't see the traffic light at all) and took his car out. Again he was shaken up but picked himself up and got on with things. He eventually got an insurance pay out and the insurance company said the car was worth more than he paid for it, so he even ended up making a profit much to his delight.

I'm not sure I could have been so unaffected myself, I perfectly understand the feeling of retribution that some people have. When I rang up the old guy (to get his insurance company details) I wanted to tell him he was a silly old coot who nearly killed my son and three of his friends, but he couldn't change what he'd done and he seemed genuinely sorry. So we don't know if he even got a fine, but hopefully the experience will make him a better driver because none of us want to see people killed and hurt.

However, anyone who has had teenage boys knows they're hard work. They all make mistakes and you always hope they do nothing really stupid, and just do something at the lower end of the stupidity scale. This is how we all learn, and believe me if I tried to smack them then they'd be more than capable of smacking me back.
