| 1163637 | 2010-12-21 22:46:00 | I find it incredible that smacking has worked for 95% of the worlds population since year dot, but now, it just turns children into violence adults?!...LMAO...Equally incredible is double the amount of violence in schools since corporal punishment has been outlawed. | SolMiester (139) | ||
| 1163638 | 2010-12-22 00:40:00 | Discipline is a natural requirement in bringing up children, until they are sufficiently mature to know right from wrong and can apply self discipline in regulating their life and behaviour. There is a vast difference between smacking a child in the course of discipline and a criminal physical assault on the child, and the stupid law makers were unable to differentiate between reasonable discipline and criminal assault, and in a catch all law made potential criminals out of tens of thousands of caring, loving, law abidiing parents. In the case of bringing up my own children, they have received the odd smack, which was used as a final sanction when recalcitrant behaviour was not going to change, and a deliberate challenge to parental authority could not be ignored. The essense of the matter is to use physical punishment rarely and only as a last resort, not as the first response to bad behaviour, because by doing so it loses it's effect. Also physical punishment should not be applied in anger, and every care should be taken to do no physical harm. |

Schools were violent when I was growing up - funnily enough the kids who repeatedly got the cane were the main perpetrators of it. As far as could tell back then - 90% of the school population never put a foot wrong, and corporal punishment made no difference to their behaviour. About eight percent did something wrong from time to time, and maybe a small percentage changed their ways as a result of fear of a repeat dose. Two percent were right tearaways, always in trouble always getting the cane, corporal punishment did nothing for them other than seemingly glorify their exploits. I always thought this lot probably went on to criminal behaviour but can't prove it one way or the other. Either way cane was of no use in changing their ways. From what my kids and teachers tell me, very little violence in schools around here today, and the punishments they have still work I'm sure except on a small minority. New Zealand is a safe country relatively, I noted the MOJ survey released the other day confirmed most people feel safe and over 50% of crime is experienced by just 6% of the population, mainly as it happens in poor economic areas. So I suggest you guys move to a better part of town. |

Other than that, they have no real idea of what happens in the true reality. And punishments these days are a joke. So the kid does something wrong, parents (who generally don't give a ****) get called in, and the kid who doesn't want to be at school get exactly what he/she wants ... 3 more days off Punishment/accountability for their actions.... where?? There is none these days. |

Unfortunately for you the facts don't support your theories, as I say move to a better part of town as your local school sure sounds out of kilter with what really happens in most schools. Better still join your school board and see if you can do something positive, although you whingers never do that. There will always be "the world was better when I grew up" types but the reality is the world is a better place now than it has ever been and New Zealand is a relatively safe country and the majority of people when surveyed in the MOJ survey confirmed that they agree. Looks like you are the one who is out of touch. |

| 1163645 | 2010-12-22 19:07:00 | 90% of the school population never put a foot wrong, and corporal punishment made no difference to their behaviour. Oh yes it did. That's why they didn't put a foot wrong - the threat of it. When I was at primary we were forbidden to touch a certain piece of equipment in class, due the damaging of it that had been occurring. 99% of the class were too scared to go near it after caning was selected as the punishment. |
