1198662 2011-05-01 06:56:00 Ok, so I got into safe mode with networking, but when I follow those instructions there is no hibernation tab. :/ pine-o-cleen (2955)
1198663 2011-05-01 08:08:00 Going into safe mode, and not having problems means that the hibernation is damaged some how. ( no kidding  )

BUT its a "catch 22" problem - Hibernation doesn't work in safe mode, when you boot normally hibernation is active, and thats when the problem arises.

There will be some way to disable hibernation in safe mode - just presently I dont know how - time to go looking. :nerd: You could try running chkdsk from safe mode, but to be honest, I have no idea if it will do any good or not.

One other thing you could try, running system restore back to yesterday or the last restore point before the problem.

I'll post how to do it in command prompt if required later -- dinner time :drool

1198665 2011-05-01 08:29:00 Ok. I tried disabling hibernation in safe mode and in recovery console by using the 'powercfg /hibernate off' command. Both come back with an error. I tried doing it quickly in normal startup, but I'm not quite quick enough.

1198666 2011-05-01 08:32:00 for XP...

navigate to

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Power\]
with regedit

Create a binary value with the name Heuristics (if it already exists, then just right click on it and select Edit). The seventh value of Heuristics is responsible for enabled / disabled hibernation.

value of Heuristics to disable hibernation.

05,00,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,3f ,42,0f,00

value of Heuristics to enable hibernation.

1198668 2011-05-01 08:42:00 Try what Bevy posted in Safe mode - the reg is available. I just found the same article here (stream-recorder.com) - should work. wainuitech (129)
1198669 2011-05-01 09:00:00 Ok, wow this is turning into a saga. So I edited the registry value which stopped it from hibernating. But now instead of hibernating, it's shutting down!

Thanks for everyones help so far.

1198670 2011-05-01 09:31:00 :horrified OK,shutting down completely, or going into a auto reboot ?

Does it give any errors / messages, or what part of loading windows does it get to before it all turns to custard again.

1198671 2011-05-01 10:17:00 Shutting down completly, no error messages. I thought it could be the power button, but it would do the same in safe mode if it was right?
